Admission process begins today for 8 courses from 5 top foreign institutions

•Technical University of Munich (Technische Universitat Munchen) has produced 15 Nobel Prize winners and 10 recipients of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, the highest German research prize.

It is among nine elite schools that receive national funding for research under the German Universities Excellence Initiative.

TUM will offer three specialisations: microelectronics, integrated circuit design and automation.


•Newcastle University is a member of the Russell Group, an association of leading research-intensive universities in Britain.

The Bachelor of Engineering in Marine Technology programme it will offer has three specialisations: naval architecture, marine engineering and offshore engineering.


•DigiPen Institute of Technology's graduates are highly sought after by top game developers and publishers such as Nintendo, Electronic Arts, Lucas-Arts, Sony, Microsoft and Dreamworks.

The two degrees it will offer are: Bachelor of Science, specialising in real-time interactive simulation/game design and Bachelor of Arts, specialising in production animation/game design.


•The Culinary Institute of America is among the best and its students have become leading chefs and restaurant owners as well as media personalities.

Its alumni include Anthony Bourdain (author, chef and TV host) and Roy Yamaguchi (author, restaurant owner and former TV Iron Chef).

•The University of Nevada, Las Vegas William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration is consistently ranked in the top two for hospitality undergraduate programmes in the United States.

Its alumni include Mr Scott Sibella, president of Mirage Hotel and Casino, and Mr George Maloof, owner and chief executive of The Palms Casino Resort.

It will offer a Bachelor of Science in hotel administration.

THE Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) will start running foreign university degree programmes for polytechnic graduates in August, earlier than originally planned.

SIT initially planned to start offering the courses next year.

But Education Minister Ng Eng Hen said yesterday 'good progress' had been made and as a result, SIT can start its degree programmes ahead of time.

The admission process for eight degree programmes from five top institutions ranging from culinary arts to video game design will now start today.

The Government will provide a roughly 75 per cent fee subsidy for the two-year degree courses - the same as the subsidies it provides for undergraduates at the three local universities. Fees will be about $18,000 over the two years.

The SIT's five partner institutions are top-notch in their fields of specialisation. They include the Technical University of Munich, the German science and engineering institution which has produced 15 Nobel prize winners; the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), consistently ranked as the best culinary school in the United States; and the DigiPen Institute of Technology, dubbed the Harvard for video game developers.

all degrees offered are niche degree with the exception of the engineering course. i think want to study business can only go for singapore institute of management, the institute of technology not suitable for many biz/IT/engineering poly grad

SIT offers engineering degree from TUM which is a very good university that produces 16 nobel laureates. I think admission to this EE and IT course is quite challenging too

SIT offer digipen BS in Real-Time for 2years. Digipen (Singapore Campus/Redmond Campus) is offering for 4years

Well, there's currently a hot debate within the Digipen students on the quality of the course offer by SIT. Likewise, if you study 4years at Redmond or Singapore, the fee excluding other expenses can amount to over 80k.

The entry requirement for the 4years course is based mainly on your personal statement (american style). But I'm not sure whether it applies to the 2years offer by SIT. But I believe SIT will gauge by your GPA unlike the one from digipen directly. My poly gpa was only 2.1 but I got in through base on my personal statement and 2 recommendation letters from the school and employer

I apply for digipen last year but gave up due to high course fee. Although it is a challenging course, but many find it too niche since it is a specialize degree.

SIT is not suitable for many engineering/IT/biz poly grad not because the degree offered are not recognised but rather the degree that they offered are those specialised degree where not many already holds that field of diploma.

I agreed for the digipen part, but for TUM it is just another top European university that offer courses just like NUS or NTU does (or even more)

yep, that's why the local students currently in the digipen singapore campus is confused over the offering by SIT!

Think alot of of things are not fixed yet. Nevertheless, no matter what decision is made by SIT, on digipen part, think it will try to stick to its ways. i.e. no letting up of requirements.

Think how they could get it done in 2 years for those doing via SIT (when normal is 4 years) is by packing in more in lesser time (don't forget also that most poly grads usually get some form of exemption also (perhaps a year off), so the real difference isn't that big a gap... can pack and spread the remaining 1 year shortfall over the course of two years).

So, those who think it'll be easier to get in (assuming SIT make it an easier entry) and thus, it'll be a walk in the park for the 2 years should be in for a very big surprise...

They should be cramping in more and at a much faster pace than normal... cause think they are still require to complete the same amount of credits if want a digipen education. So, if don't have a solid foundation go in, good luck trying to make it in there (intense study).

Since students doing the course via SIT route would be entitled to subsidy like all the recognise public tertiary institutions, those who are previously put off by the high fees (cause no official subsidy) now have a chance to do it at much cheaper cost....

Think that's the purpose of this SIT thingy. Its to allow student access to premium overseas education locally, and at local cost.

No doubt digipen education is specialised (i.e. game focused), but think because the study is more intense, its graduate should find themselves will more options beyond the gaming field also (solid foundation, and alot of core skills set are transferable).

The way its goes, think the official intention is to make this the hub for gaming in the region. Thus, the influx of game companies over the years, then the school coming in, and the rest of the local schools offering some form of gaming education. If all go smoothly, next time, a specialised game education should be the foremost requirement for entry into the industry once the foundation is firmly set.

(The SIT thing is only exclusively for poly grad (at least for the moment it seems). All others with non poly background would have a hard time trying to get in.)
