Call Support.

Tell them about it, they will change the product key for you. (Previous Product Key will be rendered unable to be used)

ok so finally I got to try out windows 8, more importantly if FRESH does work on a brand new 2T HDD.

1) S$17.99 upgrade version. Brand new HDD.
2) unplugged all my HDD inc my w7 HDD from my system.
3) performed FRESH install, left w8 installation to format my virgin HDD.
4) everything loaded seems ok EXCEPT keys entered not activated (re-entry did nothing). Prompted for a diff set of key cos no traces of previous Win detected during setup process.
5) followed instructions from website to use the REGISTRY method to have keys activated
6) REGISTRY method works like a charm !' Keys activated upon restart w/o need to enter them again at any time since.

Conclusion : if your keys cannot be activated, no need bother installing trial version of w7 XP etc, just follow these instructions instead :

"Open regedit by pressing Windows-q, entering regedit and selecting the result from the list of hits.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
Change MediaBootInstall from 1 to 0
Go back to the start screen and enter cmd there.
Right-click Command Prompt and select to run it as administrator.
Type slmgr /rearm on the command line and hit enter.
Reboot Windows now.
Run the activation utility afterwards, enter your product key to activate Windows."

Thanks TS for a most helpful and insightful thread :)

My Win8 Pro installed on Samsung 830 SSD that is in turn hooked up to my SATA II board boots up in 7-8 sec. Is this fast enough for you?

It did not happen to me basically because I wasn't using a boxed copy. There are 2 ways to obtain Windows Pro 8 Upgrade. Either online via windows.com (US$39.99) or via a boxed copy (US$69.99, local prices also have some offer i think)

Mine was online and after finishing the installation, Windows was automatically activated. In fact, on my first system I tested it out twice, both with the same result - instant activation.

First was an upgrade doing the 'Keep Nothing' option. I initially thought that was a clean install. Instantly activated, 0 hiccups.

Second, I realized that 'Keep Nothing' is not a clean install so I booted up from the DVD that I burned (when you buy the upgrade online, the Upgrade Assistant allows you to burn a copy) and installed it like as if it was a brand new system. I deleted my Windows 7 partitions and then recreated a new one for Windows 8 and formatted. Also instantly activated, 0 hiccups.

anyway, that S$17.99 loophole, (not the promo ... just the loophole) has been plugged for good ...
it now requires you a Win7 key authentication ...

for those wanna upgrade to Win8 if you do not meet the S$17.99 promo, there's still the US$39.99 (S$50) one available ....

and if you're thinking of beating the system by going thru the US$39.99 route and then getting it for S$17.99 with a promo code, that promo code must be a VIRGIN one ie one that's issued by Microsoft and that's not been used ...
confirmed plus chop bcos i tried with my S$17.99 promo codes :s13: ... FAIL !!!! :s13:

Er. No difference. US$39.99 = S$50.

I think you are talking about the US$14.99 = S$17.99 loophole that was closed.

Yea. If you want to play safe you can always image your old installation so you can dump it back in one piece any time.
