It's a pixel mapping issue. A higher bitrate 720P movie usually will look much improved over its 1080P counterpart as it will have perfect 2:1 pixel mapping.

Oh no I'm getting a little lost here :s22:

So you mean to say that 720P movies will scale perfectly and look as sharp as they used to be on my 24" on my new 27" 2560x1440 resolution, but not the 1080P ones?

Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

I am not sure how it compares to a 24" 1080p sharpness, but on a 1440p screen, 720p will look much better. You can try it out yourself to see if I am right. :D

Yeah 720o movies are 1280x720 pixels. On the Dell 27", the resolution is 2560x1440, or essentially twice the horizontal and twice the vertical resolution of the 720p movie.

1920x1080 movies, scaled to 2560x1440, it's not even, so some bluring will be there.

Having said that, I haven't really noticed a difference between 1080 on this and my older 2405w (1920x1200).

Thanks for all the inputs guys.

Tried my 720p movies last night - no joy either. They look mushy compared to when they were on my 24". Not as sharp.

And I also realized that only WMP scales the movies properly on full screen (but still mushy), whereas the other media player classic is it? can't seem to get the aspect ratio right for some movies even though I tried over riding the aspect ratios manually through the player.

Maybe because you are already used to watching them in a different resolution so it is not that noticeable for you on the new monitor with 1440p. 1080p movie on a 1200p monitor is what you did previously.

I find VLC better at decoding and scaling the videos... you might want to give it a go... but most of the stuff we download off the net aren't really recorded at high bit rates to keep file sizes down... some of my 720p videos are very sharp but the file sizes are kept small... but I also noticed that 720p mkv files can be really small but remain very sharp even on a 1440p screen... but not MP4 or avi - I think these need to be much better encoded...

Not really. 1920x1080 movies are displayed at 1920x1080 on the 1920x1200 monitor, with black bars top and bottom making up the remaining 120 pixels.

Sometimes it might be settings to your video player that affect the picture quality like maybe you tweaked the sharpness settings. Try to watch on both screens with a fresh video player, I recommend vlc and theoretically picture quality should be the same if you view them from a reasonable distance and not extremely close up.

I use CCCP + MPC (packaged together with CCCP). Never heard complaint of it with picture scaling. There will be loss in terms of sharpness when scaling, especially when the original video is poorly encoded and/or have a low bit rate.

Hi Guys,

do you use the medium font (125%) or large font (150%)?

will large font appear to be as same sharpness as medium font (125%) on 24' 1920 monitor?

I use 150% same sharpness as 125% at 1080p resolution. I tried going up to 200% but the images looked soft.

ah? then buying this 2560 27" monitor just for the size since it produce the same sharpness for readable font size as compared to 24" 1920 monitor...:(

I do still think of buying U2713hm or u2713h.

My GF will use it to do photoshop job but not sure do she really need the premium color or not.

Please advice. and what will be the best price you all can get?

I just got one of this last Thursday. Had it replaced last Friday due to severe backlight bleeding on lower left.Bleeding is still there but not as severe as the previous - I can live with it.

Last Saturday, I was editing an image (with a white background) for my presentation and noticed a sort of plaid pattern on it. So called my colleague to check why she put in that background. She said it was plain white. Anyway, accidentally I saw it using the rMBP LCD and confirmed it was plain white. So I check again on the U2713HM and to my dismay, it was the monitor indeed. Searched the net and saw it occurs on this model, they call it cross-hatching.

To make a long story short, this one is going back today - and will ask for a refund. Too bad, this one has got excellent features but it seems poor build quality.

Got some pics I took last Saturday on the cross-hatching issue, those diagonal lines in there.

Thanks for the pics and sharing. The cross-hatching is one of the issues stopping me from buying. The other is the buzzing sound on text-heavy pages like Wikipedia. Did you encounter it?

Where did you buy from? Refunds are possible? :look:

Glad to share.
Got it from Courts via their online store. Took two weeks before it got delivered because it was out of stock. It was fresh from Malaysia (as per delivery dates marked on the box), manufactured April 2013, revision A01.

It is more of a whirling sound when displayinf a lot of text. So yes, that "buzzing" is definitely there. :(
