Asus Non-Z Overclocking
... or cheap chip done cheap cheap

Sometimes when you start tinkering with a low end mobo, you immediately get the unwelcome sickly feeling that many corners have been cut to achieve the low SRP.

Well, this is NOT one of those models cos this Asus H81M-A mobo feels and plays great so far. It is a 4 layer mobo with all round solid caps and even the onboard audio sound is rather pleasing to the ears making it a viable candiate for a HTPC rig. The comprehensive UEFI as per Asus gold standard is second to none.

4GB or 8GB?
Being unsure if budget buyers go for 4GB or 8GB of RAM these days so went hunting around my storeroom for 2 x 2GB DDR1333 budget RAM sticks. Finding none in the end, had to settle for the good ol' Team DDR1600 2 x 2GB Elite budget RAM to be run at DDR1333 instead.

To be fair to the average buyer, the average overclocker of my 3 Pentium G3258 chips was chosen to be tested here since bin quality seems to be a lucky draw. This chip maxes at 4.5GHz at ~1.285V, proven stable enough for every movie x264 transcoded so far.

And as stated earlier - budget chip on 'FOC' stock cooler on budget chipset mobo with budget RAM... FTW can?!

I have limited the overclocking with a few relevant factors in mind for it to be meaningful to more users*

• stock HSF only, no additional cost
• load temps, no thermal throttling allowed
• max. vcore kept 1.20V in BIOS **

* Note that these factors may not apply to you if you have a higher budget, a better HSF or better motherboards with higher vcore limits

** Certain mobo brands are limited to just 1.20V vcore (laughable?) and no more - apparently the G brand but let's cater to them too, it may just mildly alleviate their unfortunate mobo choice and misfortune of being stuck with an obnoxious auntie reseller/forum rep.

Test Rig Setup
Asus H81M-A | PenK G3258 | Team 1600@1333* | Stock HSF | R9 290 | TT Smartpower 630W ★

Open test rig on ambient non-a/c (recent scorching weather, 34C!)

* The PenK is officially rated at DDR1333 only by Intel but my few PenK specimens have been tested RAM stable, way beyond till DDR2400 on the higher end Z chipset. Have already asked Asus to check if it is possible to lift the RAM speed limits in their next H81M-A BIOS.

Coming soon... once I can bring my blue forum thread up to speed too.

btw, the AMD R9 290 video card is in the test rig just becos' I already have the drivers on the test SSD. Too lazy to swap it out though realistically speaking, it is unlikely many buyers are going to pair this upper end card with the budget test mobo in the 1st place. Won't be doing/posting any video/gaming tests as a result unless someone specifically asks for it.

=:p

xvid4PSP x264 Transcoding
The short, medium and longer runs, all to make sure of CPU/IMC/RAM stability... was swapping around 2 x 4GB of KVR1333 RAM then too.

Still one of my fave real world stress tests, beats watching P95 boring blend and blend with nil tangible returns. :)

Well, that's roughly the kind of operating temps you can expect if you are not doing any heavy duty number crunching at this setting. Did a single album of flac to AAC audio transcoding though. :)

Yup.

Bought 3 so I can use the average chip out of 3. Won't be so real world realistic if I just pick the best overclocker and showcase it in my testing.

Depends on how you define 4.5GHz... hit and run with a few seconds/minutes of SuperPi or real world heavy duty usage. Out of the 3 at hand, 2 can do 4.5GHz < 1.30V stable in dual pass x264 transcoding which is mostly prolonged ~100% crunching.

And if you are talking about 1.30V, bear in mind you should choose a mobo which allows you to go beyond 1.20V in the 1st place. As stated earlier, certain brand mobos simply can't do that.

thanks for all those mobo links, appleboy. i will most prolly look for a board with at least 4 or more power phases for overclocking the g3258. personally, i feel boards with 3 or less power phases are insufficient for holding a 24/7 4.5ghz overclock steadily.

ASRock h81m HDS + g3258 someone get this first leh . he he.. The bundle more or less same price as newegg if bought separately.

At your request... guess what arrived today, precisely what you guys ordered - 4 power phases residing on the Asrock H81M-HDS! :D

If the asrock HDS is similar to the DGS on the charts, it would be the mobo to get, OC (waiting on Mac's review on this) when gaming and power savings settings for normal daily use :)
OK, since I have submitted some feedback and am now waiting on new bugfix BIOS for both mobos from both the A brand teams... shall cut the wait and give you a sneak preview of what you are asking for. Let's see which maker can get their bugfix out earlier... lol
