First time going to Taiwan alone over the CNY break. Just 3 nights. Anyone has any recommendations or advice???? Transport, accommodation, food issues???

Went to Taipei 2 times work-related only. So I have only been to a few of the tourists sights like Jiufen and Yehliu.

Anyone has done any hiking in Taiwan? I am keen to hike. Can recommend???

Thanks for any help! :s12:

lol I know it is last minute! I just booked it today cos Scoot was having that promotion!

I think I will want to hike either qixingshan or wuliaojian...

But I am wondering if anyone has any recommendation for staying in Jiufen or anywhere in Ruifang? I am thinking of going Jinguashi...

Thank you for responding!!

Do note. 2nd day will usually have lantern festival or maybe on the Sat/Sunday. It's going to be packed. I will advise you to find a place to stay in keelung instead.

Don't bother to think of hike cos the expressway will be jam like hell. Taiwanese will take this holidays to go to places of interest as well. Everywhere will be jam especially the freeway. Tickets of trains with seat might be all sold out and you can only buy those free standing and squeeze with people. Shops will be open even night market so don't worry about this. I have been celebrating CNY in Taiwan few years back and will be going back again this coming CNY as well. Best is to go to places where it is accessible by MRT if you are in Taipei since you are only spending 3 nights in Taiwan.

Unfortunately, I will be back by then! :(

Maybe I should just stay put in Taipei and take day trips out, less hassle that way. And hard to book accommodations now...

Will it be hard to get to Jinguashi? I thought about doing a day trip to Jinguashi from Taipei... My colleague has done and Sandiaoling hike and she said it was really nice, so I could do that if I start off early on the day I am going to Jinguashi? And end off in Shifen... What do you think?

Not hard, just that waking up early get to tms , take an early train out to ruifang, bus to jinguashi.
Sandiaoling is a good place to go. Most head out for wedding shoot at the lighthouse area.

The trick here is head out early as night falls early as well.

For me I won't go to places of interest during CNY/TW holiday periods as there are crowd everywhere. Even if you go up early, how about coming down, by the time sure packed with people and the road is actually quite dangerous and will be jam with bus going up. Be prepare to delay your next plan cos we are unable to know how long will be the jam.

Erm I am confused. Are you referring to Jiufen as you talked about going up and coming down? Actually I am not even sure all the shops in Jiufen will be open. Which is why I prefer to go hiking instead.

Unless you mean there will be a huge crowd of people hiking on CNY Thursday and Friday?

Sorry for making you confuse. I am talking about Jiufen area. :o Its seems to me that Taiwanese prefer going for a family trip more than house visiting during CNY. Will they go to hiking, i cannot confirm but places like Jiufen will be full of Taiwanese from other state as well.

Hiking is a family thing for them.
So it will be crowded and also means loads of taiwaneses, albeit friendly compared to Jiufen老街。
So hiking should still be good. But whether the lighthouse at 三貂嶺will be opened, really unsure.
Best to check with tourist booth at taipei main station.
草嶺古道, not bad, may hike again one of these days.

Oh this is news to me. Thanks for sharing. Does this mean most of the shops in Jiufen will remain open during the CNY holidays?

Actually I only know about the waterfalls at sandiaoling. I didn't know there is a lighthouse. My colleague who has hiked the waterfall trail at sandiaoling also did not mention about any lighthouse. Any pictures of the lighthouse to share?

I read about the trail at Caoling too. But I guess I will not have enough time to do it in this trip. Maybe next time. Thanks for sharing!

This one hard to say sorry, cos it will based on individual on the shop onwers themselves. What i can say is quite a handful of shops will still open during CNY unlike in Singapore. You can even go to their night market during CNY as well.

singapore is also going the commercial way. more and more coffee shops and shops, supermarkets are open on CNY. Last time, 99% are all closed and the only food available is either self-cook or fast food restaurants.

Coz now most cooks are foreign talent. They charge u 50 cents to a dollar more, you will still give, juz like hkg and macau.
