Newborn Babies & the Haze: What to Do and Watch Out For

113763f53e966f7e3f793f82917adbf9

Newborn babies are at risk from the haze and should remain indoors

Newborn babies are at risk from the haze in Singapore and should remain indoors when the PSI reading reaches 100 and above (Wussredxli advocates the following limits : 24-hr PSI 68 and 3-hr PSI of not more than 78, or 1hr AQI not more than 150). Parents should keep the doors and windows closed and use a fan or air-conditioning to ensure the room stays cool and comfortable. The filters of the air conditioner must be cleaned regularly to ensure that they are in optimal working condition.

During a haze, newborn babies require no other type of protection, such as a special curtain covering their bed.

“Keeping the baby in an air-conditioned room all day is safe as long as the thermostat is set at 22-24 degrees Celsius and not 18-19 degrees,” says Associate Professor Victor Samuel Rajadurai, Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Neonatology, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), a member of the SingHealth group. (Wussredxli's measurement and findings, the aircon FCU does not reduce more than 20% of PM2.5 particles during slight haze periods, moderate-dense haze like > 100 ug/m3 concentrations probably next to nothing due to opening/closing of doors and door gap ventilation, pls take note) “Babies should not be protected with any kind of curtain while they are lying down. This will not be effective against the tiny haze particles and may also make the baby too warm and uncomfortable.”

It is not safe to put a mask on a baby, be it indoors or outdoors.

Ill effects of the haze on newborn babies

Exposure to the haze can harm the nose, lungs, and eyes of babies and result in the following signs and symptoms:
•Itchy, watery or red eyes
•Runny nose
•Blocked nose
•Dry irritant cough
•Some form of breathing difficulty

Sneezing is often normal in newborn babies and parents need not worry about this.

If your baby experiences itchy or red eyes or if there are purulent secretions, you should consult your GP to ensure the baby doesn’t have an eye infection. “If an eye infection is ruled out, then normal saline drops can help to remove any dust particles or irritants in the eye,” says A/Prof Rajadurai.

If your baby develops a rash, consult a doctor if it appears different from a normal baby rash which usually clears up on its own in a few days.

High-risk infants and the haze

“It’s not common to have skin problems as a predominant symptom of the haze. Skin rashes are mostly benign in newborn babies and they resolve without any treatment. The usual symptoms are related to the eyes, nose and lungs. However, parents need to be extra vigilant with premature babies, babies with heart problems, infants who need prolonged oxygen or respirator support, and babies on home oxygen treatment.

In such high risk infants, if respiratory symptoms such as worsening of cough or breathing difficulty were to occur, the paediatrician or neonatologist should be consulted as early as possible rather than attributing the above symptoms to the haze,” says A/Prof Rajadurai.

For all other symptoms that persist, consult a doctor.

Wow....just noticed these 2 Air Quality Forecast models by aqicn based on winds and air quality readings.

You can see how Singapore is affected by Southern Sumatra and Western Kalimantan, as we alternate being smoked by both areas with every slight change in wind direction.

I don't think it's very accurate, but it does give you an idea on how it can turn out in real life.

http://aqicn.org/forecast/asia/

The above prediction is based on composite meta model, computed using several Air Quality Forecasting Systems (AQFS): •The Spectral Radiation-Transport Model for Aerosol Species (Sprintars) model by Toshihiko Takemura from Kyushu University.
•The Air Korea Air Quality forecast, by the Korean Integrated Air Quality forecast center(대기질 통합예보센터).
•The Asian Forecast of Aerosols Optical Depth, by the ECMW MACC Program (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate).

The above map is based on the PM2.5 surface level modeling, and colors are following the US EPA AQI standard.

Phuket health advisory issued over forest fire haze PHUKET: The health chief for Phuket has issued an advisory for people with breathing difficulties, as well as children and the elderly, to stay indoors, away from the haze that has descended on Phuket today (August 27). -

“People with heart or lung conditions are urged to please be careful. If your chest begins to hurt, you develop a headache or it becomes difficult to breath, please see a doctor,” said Dr Bancha Kakong, Director of the Phuket Provincial Health Office (PPHO), in a press release issued today. His office had yet to receive any reports of breathing-related conditions brought on by the haze, he added.

An officer at the Natural Resources and Environment Phuket office told The Phuket News that the regional NRE head office in Songkhla had confirmed that the haze originated from forest fires in the south of Sumatra, Indonesia.

last night every time i open my room door. my ax40 turns red :(

You are in the north or west, or north west?

Not surprising for last night for N and W. My Sharp also often gives blinking orange + green when it's hazy. Now we just use the laser particle counters.

2013, I experienced red + orange. heh....

Those IR LED photodiode sucks one lah. Buy a real laser particle counter from TB for under $100, not say accurate but relatively it's extremely sensitive for "home use".

http://list.qoo10.sg/item/2015-AIR-PURIFIER-SINGAPORE-BRAND/428257530

Anyone tried this? Reviews?

Replacement filter available from Taobao? :s22:

Replacement filter can get from them. Or customise the size from TB.
This one has too low an airflow. It's just nice in high speed for small BTO bedroom (5 ACH) but it'd be too noisy. It is small though. But if you want it to be small, go for the Sharp A28.

If you wanna get that, you might as well get this one. It's reviewed in the Chinese youtube video that I posted 1-3 pages earlier. 319 m3/hr measured.

Brand new in box
$120 - http://www.gumtree.sg/a-miscellaneo...or-120-usual-at-199/1001404078170910721075309

Sealed
$99 - http://www.gumtree.sg/a-other-healt...ier-kj30fenv-sealed/1001382187030910673161709

For the Midea/美的, the HEPA and AC filters are available on TB directly. Or you can customise.

BTW, the Sharp A28 can use this for DIY directly. Just measure and use a scissors to cut off in the direction of the pleats, just cut like 3-4 pleats if I rem correctly. Then push it into the cavity and cut up the plastic packaging of the HEPA, roll it up and stuff it into the gaps to prevent bypass. It's just a 20-30 mins effort. The performance of the filter is good, approx. 98-99% efficient at 0.3 microns when installed in the A28 (surprise!). Airflow is decent.

I mean, the original Sharp filter is H10, it's lower performance than this.

You can get either the one with or without the cardboard edge. Or just 1 of each to see which one you like better for starters.

Can't be beaten at RMB26-29 price now.

The above DIY can also use be in the Samsung AX40 (Samsung is 280mm x 310mm LxW...need to plug it up more). I use it during the non haze months for rough use. Coz output would be ~ 200m3/hr-230m3/hr, the wattage that I measured from the socket with a digital multimeter is 19W. It maybe causes the Samsung AX40 to spin slower due to resistance, somehow the AX40 draws less current from the wall socket then.

Lagi better, coz I don't need that cleaning power. The air still can reach 0 ug/m3 on my meter (just a reference figure as the display for that is BIG, I don't stare at the xxxx particles/L @ 0.3 microns figure all the time). During hazy months, I'd use the RMB 110 customised 45mm thick HEPA, which is like 2X as expensive if you calculate it (2X as thick, 29.9 x 2 = 58.8RMB)

Some people hate DIYs like these. But for me, I like changing every 3-4 months for rough use, don't like the smell from the HEPA esp the Samsung AX40 in which I blow the output at me directly for cooling with or without aircon (coz the airflow is angled, just as a fan sometimes).
Or maybe change it like this. 45mm thick RMB110 = 5 months. Remaining 7 months RMB26 = 3.5mth + 3.5mth.

There is another RMB35 or 40RMB DIY HEPA on the same TB seller page that is 35mm thick and has cardboard sides, I'd not really recommend that one as it has about 15% less pleat folds than the 25mm one. So end up also ard the same.
