On 5GHz network:

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.27:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 99, Lost = 1 (1% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 2ms, Maximum = 2705ms, Average = 601ms

On 2.4GHz network:

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.27:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 99, Lost = 1 (1% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 238ms, Average = 68ms

I managed to work out how to reduce the ping round trip times, the phone display need to be on and the home screen shown.
With black screen (sleep mode) on, the times are much longer. Check to make sure your phone is not in lower-power sleep mode throughout the ping test.

However, the 5GHz ping RTT average and peak times (average 101ms) is still longer than the 2.4GHz wifi average and peak RTT time (average 57ms) on AC87U.

The problem is you need to understand dipole antenna reception pattern( it is the same as the radiation pattern). It is like a doughnut around the stick. The ends of the stick are null points (no reception). See here:

You have to use those wifi access points with patch antenna, those that stick on the ceiling or wall, one on each floor. If you want to use a single router with those antenna sticks, some of the antenna sticks must be turned horizontal. Eg the Asus AC5300, four spread vertical, four spread horizontal. With AC88U, two horizontal, two vertical.

Would it be better running an n66u as a repeater or using

Netgear AC1200 Wi-Fi Range Extender?

Thanks for the suggestion. My screen was indeed turned on for the duration of the tests. For a network that is supposed to be less congested than the 2.4GHz one, the 5GHz does seem to be having worse performance right? I was seated about 4m away from the router in both cases.

So this router worth getting? U all talk too cheam :)

No, the 5GHz connection latency is too long.
Quantenna 5Ghz firmware, the closed source thing, needs to be improved on.

Thanks bro. M1 throwing this in but top up 99 bucks

I bought it when it was launched in Aug last year, initially there were some hiccups but ASUS has been aggressively fixing the bugs and adding new features as we speak.

So far the 5GHz has been working very well for me after they updated the Quantenna driver.

Do we have to update driver etc if we buy those from M1?

Sorry for the noob question, but for single storey HDB should we put all 4 antennas straight up for best signal.. Like this: I I I I

Recommended position is \ | | /

Dear all,

We are working on newer SDK 5Ghz driver and we will release after testing.

Below message is especially for PepeEL & VANT,

I will answer your future question below.

- We will release as official build when it is done. - NO ETA.
- The new firmware will be using the newer SDK then 380_721.
- We won't be adding WIFI icon or anything you suggested to input the firmware.

Best regard,
JK

Depending on which version of the firmware it's installed. If it's 3.0.0.4.378.9313 then you're using the latest one as of now.

for a single storey apartment, |||| position is the best..

the \||/ is for multi purpose usage, especially the 2 storeys kind of apartment.

manufacturers print the \||/ position as recommended is because it suits both single storey and multi storeys apartment, and the only down side for using \||/ in a hub flat is that it penetrates the upper and lower storeys flats. so its still kinda better than having not signal if placed in |||| position for people in multi storey apartment..

That is why I am still holding on to my AC87U, and also if I were to upgrade, gives me confidence to upgrade to another Asus product. Applause to Asus. Otherwise I would have already been gone long time ago and swore off every single Asus products. But a new buyer would not be advised to purchase it until there is clarity in the performance from current users. This is the purpose of having a feedback channel. It helps to set the facts right, provide proper balanced feedback so that bugs in client side can be identified and manufacturer is not faulted wrongly. Many times, a wifi router can underperform due to client issues, not due to router itself.

Dear JK,
I make a suggestion! I recommend adding LED timer switch option, although the router panel LED on the key. But I do not want to go there every day twice. LED at night is really bright. I do not know JK can add it in the next firmware? For example, I want the LED lights up 7:00 am, 23:00 to close. This will not affect my sleep, you think?
best wishes
Shaobing
