It's a common problem with this model. Log into the router and "rebooting" should solve it temporarily. The latest firmware allows you to set "reboot" times - though i have mine 2x/week at 3am, I still encounter a disconnection of my 5GHz about every other week or so. Totally disappointing that Asus is not doing anything to address this longstanding issue.

Besides this, I've also encountered frequent downtime for the 2.4GHz and wired connections, until I turn the router off and on. This even with a cooling pad (which debunks the myth that it's a cooling issue). It simply is a poor product from Asus. Will save up and get a Netgear soon.

Hi guys, can I have a quick check, currently im on PCE-68 + RT-87, if I click on Wifi on windows 8, view connection settings, click on my connected wifi, the Protocol is showing me 802.11n instead of AC, I'm connected to the 5Ghz band and I'm worried that I'm still getting N speed for some reason, how else can I check if I'm really on AC speed currently?

go to your ac87u wireless log and see?

if not, look at the connected link rate. pce-ac68 is capable up to 1300 on wireless ac, if u don't reach anywhere near despite within a reasonable distance, then confirm u no on wireless ac lor..

It is a PCI-E Slot card -> PCE-68, so its not bottleneck by bandwidth (I hope).

The PCE-68's wireless monitor for some reason after an update it doesnt show me what speed it is connected to.

DriftKing,

802.11ac is only recognized by windows 8.1 (NOT windows 8)

Could you share with us your Windows build and router 5Ghz configure settings.

I'm using a Asus RT AC66U now and wanted to buy a 2nd hand Asus RT AC87U for a upgrade.

I heard and read about the infamous 5G Wifi issues.

Is it solved ?

Should I change my router ?

If you want to upgrade then i suggest you get any of these three router: RT-AC88U, RT-AC5300 and RT-AC68U.

The Asus RT-AC87U have lot of issue on wireless, unless you are using MU-MIMO beta build firmware that i have posted earlier than the 5Ghz will be stable.

Stay away from this router. Experienced disconnection 2x today, had to turn the router off and on.. this despite rebooting it twice a week and adding a cooling pad. Crap product.

help

hi guys, need help before i throw my asus products down the building.
i'm using the ac87u (merlin fw) and started facing connectivity issues recently to the 2.4ghz network (i rely on 2.4ghz network bcos 5ghz range seems to suck so bad). Check out these results below

2.4ghz (client device far from router)
a) iphone 6s (signal/ping/download/upload = 3outof3bars/2ms/80Mbps/30Mbps)
b) Desktop with asus pce-ac68 (signal/ping/download/upload = SSID appears & disappears randomly. When 2.4ghz channel appears, can't connect. Only 5ghz SSID is stable)

5ghz (client device far from router)
a) iphone 6s (signal/ping/download/upload = 2outof3bars/4ms/35Mbps/30Mbps)
b) Desktop with asus pce-ac68 (signal/ping/download/upload = 4outof5bars/4ms/1Mbps/1Mbps)

*speedtest results are from speedtest Viewqwest server. (my broadband = 1gbps Viewqwest)

Is there something wrong with my asus pce-ac68? (i've downloaded latest drivers) furthermore i can't connect to router homepage from my desktop! (blank white page). From my iphone however can and the speed also so much better...

Can you repost the link to the beta firmware please? This thread is getting too long to search through

With beamforming on now, the 5G is much better. I used to have trouble getting signal on my 2.4GHz band in the kitchen area, but with BF on, I can get 1-2 bars of the 5G even.

WIll monitor and see if the outages to the 5GHz recur. Thanks poor_poor.
