Re thread: ' One-off public transport voucher 'worth too little''
Applying for it a hassle, so poor go elsewhere for aid, say MPs, help agencies

The lukewarm response to the one-off vouchers that are meant to help the poor cope with fare hikes could be due to the amount offered and hassle in applying for them, MPs and help agencies told The Straits Times.
In Parliament on Monday, it was revealed that just over half of the 200,000 public transport vouchers available for needy residents to offset the fare increase in 2011 were taken up.
And this was after the Government had made two public announcements for applications.
"Maybe we could increase the amount given and simplify the administration so more people will come forward," MP for Holland- Bukit Timah GRC Liang Eng Hwa said.
(1) Ride bicycle is faster, cheaper than taking the bus.
- 'Public transport in Singapore: Ride bicycle is faster (18Jan2012), (alt URL) '
- '(Singapore) Cycling home - faster than public transport (12Feb2006)'
- 'Is it faster to cycle or take public transport in London? (19Sept2013)'
- Public transport operators are share holder owned for profit listed companies they are stingy with the value of public transport vouchers sponsored and it is difficult to obtain them : 'One-off public transport voucher 'worth too little'' (ST,15Nov2013)

(2) Cycling is good for the health and Singaporeans need to exercise more as healthcare costs increase and Singaporeans become more and more old, clumsy and fat with every passing day.
- 'One Million Diabetics By 2050 as Singaporeans Get Older, Fatter'- "Every one in two people, by age 70, will be diabetic - up from one in three today"(Men's Health, Oct2012, URL)

- Cost of living increases with a compulsory increase in national healthcare premium costs: 'National Day Rally 2013: MediShield premiums, Medisave rates to go up on broader coverage, says PM Lee'

- As people grow more clumsy, sickly and fat (+/- slow/ stupid), govt healthcare payouts also have to increase: 'More received help through Medifund in 2012: MOH' (TDY 15Nov2013)

(3) Singapore is a major per capita carbon polluter, amongst others responsible for the problems linked to global warming: "Of the major, non oil economies, Singapore takes the biscuit for Mr Global Dirty, with 36.6 tonnes per person, followed by Luxembourg (21.7t), Australia (18.8t) and US (16.1t)" ['Carbon emissions per person, by country etc – here’s the latest data (and it doesn’t look good)' (Oxfam, 29June2012)]- cycling can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicle use.

Weather so hot and sometimes ponding. How to cycle?

Burn more fossil fuels, cause more weather calamity, then u will ask- with flooding and typhoons how to cycle? Question is that if not now, then when- next life is it?

Need bicycle storage areas, shower facilities, cycling lanes everywhere. Come on, burn more fossil fuels and public funds and make it so. We are already spending tens of billions just to make sure you can cycle along the east coast all the way to west coast for leisure.

Everyone need to invest about 500 bucks on a road bike , more for protection gear and future maintenance costs.

Better yet, go back to kampung lifestyle and walk. A person can cover 5km in a hour.

More money for the needy's transportation? But we have GST !...Oh well, will take decades or never for it to happen.

For now, back to carpool and squeezing into public transport while the incumbent government allows more people to immigrate to Singapore and "maximize" the infrastructure efficiency. :s22:

So closing the bus company or increase bus fair 200% may be a quicker solution to get people to use foot or cycling?

Soon, you will see bicycle price become sky high too. As it cause lots of traffic jammed and safety issue. Some major city in China is a good example to you!

China is traffic jammed because like Singapore, car ownership is prestige choice, they think cycle is low class, menial device, drive Ferrari most style n women like men w fast cars. Also, pollution there has gotten out of hand, once a cycle friendly place, things have since changed- for the worse that is, now people are talking about jow people who want to be rich have become heartless and selfish, e.g the 2yr girl who was run over by bus/car, 18 passers by but nobody stopped to help, until one old lady scavenger came by and helped the girl up.

Bicycle price being sky high is nonsense since its very easy to produce a gearless one, China gentle man bike still going at $160- still can get I believe.

Transport performance of road is dependent on the cooperation and maturity of users- Singapore can have 4 lane expressway, but when so many hand phone drive, tailgate, show off acceleration, drunk drive at times/ speeding heavy vehicles, we all know how bad accidents can cause massive traffic jams, cycling on road is same, there are rules to follow and people must learn to give way, then only can Singapore move forward, otherwise, we are a dictatorship and even N Korea will look down on us then.
