May I know, the different series, eg city, friends, creator etc, are the pieces interminable for playing or building your own design? Or must I stick to only one series.

All legos can be mixed together and build into your own designs. Usually call MoCs (My Own Creations). Please go ahead and do so! Hope you create something awesome.
