Hi HWZoners,

I'm embarking on a project to update and refresh the site.
For those of you who noticed, our content pages have had a styling refresh since early this month. Now it's time for some updates in the forum.

We'll soon be merging the Peripherals sub-forum, Storage Clinic and Monitor Channel forums. All these discussions will now take place within just the main "Hardware Clinic".

Reasons:-

- A poll which I conducted a long time back indicated a preference to have a wider discussion scope within HWC.
- It will help members post content easily in one main forum
- It will make moderation easier for moderators.

With this change, you can now discuss almost most DIY aspects within the main Hardware Clinic forum.

However to cope with this change, I would like everyone to follow a basic forum nettiquete to categorize your discussion subjects/threads with a [Category] tag. This will help make the the forum easier to read/glance/consume information and search. Examples:-
- [DIY]
- [GFX]
- [Monitor]
- [Storage]
- [Keyboard]
- so on and so forth, feel free to improvise but follow the rule moving forward.

The change to the forum structure will take place within the next few days, but the new direction applies with immediate effect.

There will also be other similar changes in some of the other forums too but I'll update them progressively.

Thank you and have a good time using our forums :)

Or maybe [Scam alert] need to pay $1000/component for the warranties?

Just joking...

Actually if it is possible to make it a point in such a way that, when we create a thread, it forces the users to select under the drop down bar that gives each and every users a categories to choose from.

Like example:

On each new thread:

[DIY]
[Reviews]
[others]
[Recommendations]
[Troubleshooting]
etc

Then at the Title text box: whatever title the user wants it to be.

objection.

main forum will be flooded all with genre like edmw

The problem is, people would rather go to Main Forums rather than sub forums as of now.

Look at the project logs how many views?

Look at the Knowledge based. Who really read it? Or even bother to see it when they need help in DIY etc?

Having [....] is good but it needs to be regulated with a drop-down menu or else the content could be "EDMW-like".

Possible to make the top 5-8 options selectable ? Easier for new users, or those seldom freq. this forum. Or they only come to HWZ once a blue moon when they are upgrading or building new system.

- [DIY]
- [GFX]
- [Monitor]
- [Storage]
- [Keyboard]
- so on and so forth, feel free to improvise but follow the rule moving forward.

Yeap there should be things to be like a drop down menu to select.

[Reco ***] - 95% of threads (plus auto insert link to GS's thread)
[Tech Support] - 3% of threads
[Remainder] - 2% of threads

------------------------------

I'd prefer a separate recommendations sub forum...

The OTHERS category is for what purpose? Non hw related? Like hoots and chit chat? Else it will be open to abuse.

edit from darkblue and royfrosty

think dont need so many category , just make it general and simple.
[Category] tag must be short else thread title will be damn long

what i tink
- [DIY Help] > recommend complete build
- [Reviews]
- [Troubleshoot]
- [Guides]
- [Discuss]
- [Recommend] > recommend pc parts and everything else
- [News]
- [Hoot] > for distro to post wad new on market
- [Official] > why no fanclub 1?
- [Deals]

another thing is why admin dont allow us to ownself change thread title.

TBH the main thread of current now does not seems to have very big crowd draw yet atm.

Every hour when i login and see, there is hardly more than 10 new threads per hour. May be on a busy day like sat and sun which may attract more people in viewing. But other than that not much people are actually opening new threads.

Perhaps out of that 10. 6 are recommendations for PC. 2 are having problems with their PC. and 1 probably a general pc stuffs and the remainders will be NEWS on distro new products/promos.

Perhaps sub forums can be like, personal projects. Cause that is definitely hard to remove it or relocate to main forum as it is peoples hard work and at times when people view it, if they have any question they will PM over and ask.

I doubt, even with a unified main forum will still be overcrowded like EDMW.

As @muddle. [Others] will be something for non related to any of the categories. If not then can probably opt out and force users to select either one of the other categories.

I think the main aim for a main forum will be good, cause it helps to unite all the pc stuffs together as 1. Not only that, it helps the increase in flow of posting new threads and getting probably a much faster response.

Also good to have things like Certain Sticky threads that are useful to help newcomers on how the forums work, how to DIY, certain guides etc for easy viewing for new comers.

At least they have something to view and becomes a vast knowledge area so that people can relate to it.

At least as a newbie, they dont feel so intimidated or pai seh to open up a new thread.

Equally important would be the ability to filter by categories when viewing, else everything like rojak and cannot find anything
