Hi everybody,

Being working in mattress line for many years, I would like to explain various pointers when choosing over a brand. I am sure you had heard of brands like King Koil and Four Stars, which are pioneer to the mattress industry probably we used to sleep on them when we are young :s13:

The brand such as Simmons/Sealy/Serta/Spring Air/King Koil etc.. are well known in the market. The brands I mention had paid a serious amount of money into its marketing such as TV commercials/newspaper, departmental stores and even SBS bus decals! All these fees are not forked out and bear alone by the company itself. IT IS YOU, consumers, who will share the cost of it other besides than the cost of the mattress.

If you want to compare the prices and models, sad to tell you, online information are never accurate and models are limited. Eg. What Courts is selling, you will never find it in Harvery Norman. The best is to get your butt down and survey. I would recommend Courts as your price guideline ( Just don't create a mess for the sales representative ) :s13:

Another thing is the VALUE. Brands overall are still "brands" in the end it is still the COMFORT AND VALUE you are choosing over.

OK.

Lets say you are comparing a $3000 Simmons BeautyRest Mattress with a $2599 Spring Air Presidential Suite range of mattress. Both are pocket spring with Latex and you like both of them. Which to choose?

Simple.

For Simmons/Serta/Sealy they have super super expensive range such as $20,000 + above and you can view them at Orchard Takashimaya B1 or B2. :s22:

If you are picked a Simmons mattress for $3000, you are paying for a low-mid range model because their middle and best range are $8000 - $20,000+ and considering you spending $3000. Which is quite a awful big amount for some fellow members here :s13:

Where Spring Air highest range was $5000 - $6000 only. Why? Because in Singapore they don't do advertising and promoting, so what you are paying are actually the real quality and comfort instead of helping company paying their commercials, sad to said.

On top of that, do look for bundle values. $1399 for mattress and bed frame etc etc. Be smart, nth is so good for you to believe, yes the price is attractive but both mattress and frame have a certain amount of cost depending on what you are looking for ( technology, quality, material used). For sure, it is either the mattress is a cheapo one with a average PU leather frame or an average mattress with a slim shady PVC bed frame :s13:

I hope I did answer some of the member question and their doubts. Do drop me a message if you have any inquiry, I will reply once I am free :D

To make it simple, there are three types of materials used in the comfort of the mattress ( Cushioning )

FOAM, LATEX, MEMORY FOAM

Foam are the old mattress where we used to sleep during the eariler days because that is widely 99.99% used as cushioning and comfort in the past and they are cheap. Do note some they name their foam such as soft foam, rebond foam, cooling foam. Bottomline, eh. still foam. They are also more heat retaining and less cooling compared to latex.

Latex are the one I recommend and very popular among the modern mattress. It is no doubt more cooling, more durable and comfortable than foam. Latex have many process such as 100% Nautral Latex and the Talalay Latex process. Nautral saying it is naturally gathered ( Of course ) and the cleaning of latex is 1 time cleaning process and after that, chunk it into the mattress. For Talalay is a different process and yes it is still 100% natural :s13::s13::s13:. It has been process and clean 3 times, heat and freeze for 4 times till there is tiny breathable air cell on the latex itself.

Memory Foam. Simple to say it is a chemical process ( NEVER NATURAL ). So they mixed chemical into FOAM, or better quality such as latex. The result will be a very contouring comfort it is pressure relieving which is proven to reduce backaches. Feels like quicksand, if the chemical is upon foam, it will be slightly warmer, if on latex, the cooling properties will be the same as latex.

There are 2 types of basic spring. Bonels Spring and Pocketed Spring.

The olden days are bonel spring and they are all inter-link and connected to each other. Meaning that there is partner disturbances if movement is present. *Do note they might called it power spring, protective coil and etc etc names they can think of. Just ask him the person this question. Pocketed or Innerspring? ( AKA Bonel )

Pocketed spring is a individual support type of coil spring. These are very recommended by me, Simmons are the first to invented this technology and yes. It is the bowling ball commerical, sad to say it is also very expensive. But in the market, 9 out of 10 uses the similiar pocket spring they uses and the result are very similar and nice too.

The only brand that Patent and copyright its own spring system is Sealy. They called it the Sealy Posturepedic and yes the watering the husband and spamming coffee powder commericals. They are more costly because of their ad and also their one and only patent spring which only they have. Bottom line for me, it is pocketed spring but are inter link . Surprised right? So if your partner are very prone to disturbance, a pocketed spring is still recommendable.

So how to identify which non 4 S mattress to buy?

Partner is keen on Sealy or Serta, which I'm kind of against as I don't see the value.

Hello

Is pocketed spring recommended only if two people will be sleeping on the same bed, i.e Queen and King only?

Is it necessary for single or super-single where only one person will be sleeping on it?

Serta disappoints. This bed gives you sore. I have the Serta Sophistication King for coming close to 3 years and it starts sagging which i didn't notice when it begins (I'm less than 65Kg and my wife weighing much less). Initially the bed is comfortable and supporting my sensitive back from good showroom testing, but i'm beginning to wake up sleepy with an aching back and sore neck. Anyway, i do travel a lot, am not in the bed often. So when I start to find hotels bed getting more comfy than Serta's claim on "We Make the World's Best Mattress", i'm feeling that i'm left out on the main stream. Can you imagine every night sleep is a struggle to climb uphill to the middle only to find everything is in vain while you still have half of your torso sliding back into the sag.

Reported this to customer service and was refer to an officer to measure the sagging. It is slightly below the fine prints of 1.5inch to warrant a replacement. Thus 2 options is thrown:

1) Pay $200 plus transportation ++ more, Serta will try to insert memory foam to the sagging area. (Memory foam and Latex mix? What are you Serta guys thinking?)

2) Pay to upgrade to New Sophistication package. Price $5K plus $200 for transport, and minus the current mattress depreciated price of 3 years which I pay for 4.3K with free gifts 3 years back. They calculated on the price of my current mattress minus the whatever free gifts given on the first day of purchase (be careful with what's written on your receipt, you should not be paying for your "free gifts" in the first place, that's unethical sales), thus the mattress is 3.6K x 0.7 ~ 2.5K. So 5k -2.5k = 2.5K to topped up. I agreed with the depreciation, but charging me the new mattress for a retail pricing with no discount is not helping. I told them they could have minus away whatever in the free gift for the new Sophistication which i do not need! They now argue the fact that its free, and there is nothing they can do to bring the new mattress cost down. What a ripped off!

Seem like these are the only 2 options offered for a faulty mattress and a customer whom have yet utilized the mattress for what proclaims to last for 10 years.

My thought is why will i pay additional 2.5K just after 3 years from an initial purchase of 4.3K and to ride my chances to possibly get another lemon product 3 years down the road?

Trust me, I have done a lot of research into looking for a good bed. We tried on all the 3 big 'S': Sealy, Simmons, Serta and various Mid models brand, with each of their technology on taralax latex, memory foam, pocketed spring. Talking about getting practical test and budget right and finalize on a Serta for its initial comfort support (Come to senses, we left out the biggest detail when you shop for a bed ~ After Services. Period.

It will be worth of my post if I can just save 1 person from walking into where we are now. Good luck!

Sorry to hear! I've recently purchased the serta sophistication after deliberating between the slightly more expensive tempur mattresses, but have not gotten it delivered yet..

The second remedy they've offered you sounds pretty workable, less the inclusion of 'free' gifts cost..

Anyone else have bad experience with Serta? and TS's thoughts?

Between spending on a top brand's low to medium range and a mediocre brand's medium to high range, I think the latter is better. Your views?

i prefer seahorse, cheap&good

Kind of agree. Bought mine, king size last year for around 700++ or 800, comfy. even if next time move house need to throw instead of move to new place, also not as heart pain as those elite brands. my wife's colleague is moving selling house in late july, can only move into new place in oct, will put furniture in those storage rental place. when asked why not throw the mattress or give to people? she said, it is too expensive to throw or give away...

My choice is simple, buy firm mattress(king size) which is below $300/- and change it every 2 years, reason being, no matter how good a mattress is, due to Singapore humidity, bedbug will infest after a certain period.

where do you get this believe from?

bedbugs will infest if you have bad hygiene, ie; dont bathe and sleep, dont wash sheets, smell and odor built up, and do not do anything to clean the place.

Yes you are asking for bedbugs.

But if you stick to a routine of wash sheets and protector once a week, and bath before lying on your mattress.
Also maintain your mattress health by dry heating your mattress if possible.

I strongly believe that bedbugs will not come so easy.

well here is some material that can help you a little
