Have done as you said - lets see if the 5GHz keeps going... cheers

I have only had this problem with SOME versions of dd-wrt and maybe one of the very older Asus firmwares but not in the past 2 months of Asus firmware. Matter in fact I think I had your issue because I did not have a laptop cooler under my first one(my first one had all kinds of weird issues in the last month that I owned it, due to it overheating) and this is my second 87r but I put a laptop cooler under it.

I would download the latest asus firmware (I am on the latest beta)

1. follow my direction on the previous page to get your router into recovery mode and flash with the newest firmware in recovery mode.

2. after the flash is complete and the router is running ( about 3 minutes, give it 5), press the reset button on the back for 5 seconds.

3. let the router come back up and configure it from scratch manually (like a new router).

test it now and if the problem comes back get the router replaced under warranty.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

OK.. so it did it again.. twice actually, once using 6117 and also with latest Merlin FW - so I am sending the unit back to Amazon. I have decided to replace it with either 68u or Netgear r7000 as this model still has too many issues - I will miss the trend micro parental controls, but not the other issues that seem to plague this router..

OK, if I would have known you could send it back I would have strongly advised you do.

We are coming up to a year and still not even 90% close, when something gets fixed something else breaks.

I still have my 68, I had all kinds of USB issues with it for the entire time I had it in service, but now I no longer use USB on router's at all sooooooo..........

5 GHz sucked on the 68 in distance, but 2.4GHz was stable and distance is really great.

The chip makers are punching out new chips and the router manufactures can not hire enough staff to keep up with changes and stability. If I did not have the 87 I would get a Asus rt-ac5300 when it comes out, or stick to my 68.

This 87 should last me years if Asus can get the firmware stable and I keep a laptop cooler under it. The 87 is great for 5GHz range but almost a year into it and still the firmware is all over the place, like a love hate relationship, one moment you love it due to its 5GHz range, the next minute the firmware glitches and connection speed or ???? goes to crap. Not to mention 2.4GHz issues lately.

Best of luck
let us know what you decide.....

One thing for sure, Asus sure does communicate better than any other manufacture, but only here tho. !!!!!!THANK YOU ASUS !!!!! Elsewhere they are just like the rest.

EDIT
Asus: I know you finally upgraded to some new driver or?? but now have to reimplement all the fixes, please do not forget the PS4 lag fix cause I am starting to see it again. Thank You!!

Dear Samsung user,

I need to select 2 users who allows our R&D team to visit your house for debugging RT-AC87U on Samsung device.

Max: 2 to 4 human to visit your house.

Do drop me a PM, but we cannot promise we will 100% visit your house now.

We will arrange with you guys.

*Please make sure you have issue with the Samsung and RT-AC87U router.

Best regard,
JK

Dear all,

We found 2 friendly users who allow us to do a house visit, but 1 of the user timing we couldn't make it. So we left 1 friendly user :(

We need more samsung users who have issues with RT-AC87U for a house visit during 15th June 2015 and 17th June 2015.

Do drop me an PM.

Best regard,
JK

No it did not. Of the 3 AC68x's I have owned or currently own, all performed adequately on the 5GHz band. Yes I still had to use a range extender to get sufficient signal strength into my daughter's room on the 5GHz band, but that was the case with EVERY router until I bought my AC87R.

You are making a VERY subjective statement without offering any corroborating information whatsoever. I was immensely satisfied with my AC68x's. In fact, I upgraded to the AC87R only after being told by others that the 5GHz performance on this router was ~5x better than the AC68x.

The chip makers are punching out new chips and the router manufactures can not hire enough staff to keep up with changes and stability. If I did not have the 87 I would get a Asus rt-ac5300 when it comes out, or stick to my 68.

I am convinced that one of the reasons that my router is so rock-solid stable is due to 2 factors.

1) Active cooling (see avatar)
2) Not messing with my settings.

Now that I have a configuration that blows the doors off of any other WiFi setup that I have ever had, I no longer need any other WiFi devices. My RT-AC87R covers all 7500 ft² of my property with the 5GHz band!

That's right! Not only does the 2.4GHz band cover my property but so does the 5GHz band. No other router except for the latest Amped Wireless flagship can do that. And now that I have a backed-up configuration that works great using John 9527's terrific utility life is way cool indeed.

I am sorry to hear of your troubles dude (and trust me, I've been there & feel your pain) but don't make broad statements as if they are etched in stone. Many users, I bet it's an overwhelming majority, have no problems.

IIRC, your PS4 lag issue was diagnosed by Merlin and was rather unique to your network topology but I could be wrong.

Good luck dude. :)

Dear dfran1,

Relax :)

We are here to learn.

Maybe his environment is very stable for his router, but i believe there is no perfect product in this world.

JK

Hi JK,

I appreciate your effort in trying to make things right on this router. However, I cannot agree with your statement that we are here to learn and report issues. Granted, not all products are perfect but we certainly not expecting to pay a good 300 bucks to "learn and report issues".

I am sure you will agree with me that as a consumer, we are expecting a product we purchased should at least perform to what it claims rather then we have to keep fixing it thru firmware updates on trail and error fashion.

Just my thought and hope no offence is taken.

All I can say is that I want whatever dfran1 is having so I can get hammered too. :)

Seriously though, I have never said any such thing of what I am being accused of. :s11:

Why dfran1 insists on making baseless accusations against me I don't know.

I apologize for any wrong that he may have perceived.

Good day sir. :)

At any rate, do not listen to either one of us. Do your own research and make up your own minds.

Dear terencec,

Sorry I have phase wrong sentence.

Does anyone know if the USB Port at the back of the router can supply power to drive a Laptop Cooler (Fan) device?

Asus,
When can we get another beta?

I now need to reboot this daily, I could not even connect to PS4 CODAW until I reboot the router, and last night I had to do the same to get rid of lag.
I am on the latest official posted beta.
Thank You.

I just found this article you all would love to know

Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 15.57.56
Noticed your iPhone and Mac’s Wi-Fi weren’t so good over the last year? You’re not alone, and Apple is finally fixing it, albeit quietly.
Wi-Fi problems were one of the biggest complaints about Apple’s Yosemite update for Mac last year, with thousands of users taking to Apple’s support forums to air frustration.
Ever since upgrading to yosemite, discoveryd goes to 100% cpu and dns requests fail. What new nightmare is this?! pic.twitter.com/ErYAtAsAbM
— Michael Koziarski (@nzkoz) October 17, 2014
If you’re wondering exactly what happened, there are a few moving parts. First, you need to understand what the Domain Name System (DNS) does.
Each computer on the internet has an IP address, which is like where it can be found on a street. Domain names for websites, like thenextweb.com, have an attached IP address that locates these computers. Think of a domain name as a human-readable way to get to the right IP address.
DNS servers, like the ones Google or your internet provider offers, keep a directly of domain names and their IP addresses.
When you type thenextweb.com into your Web browser, your computer requests the address from a DNS server, then takes you to the right page. It all happens without your knowledge — at least, when it works.
For the better part of twelve years, Apple used a single piece of software called “mDNSResponder” to manage much of your Mac’s networking, including this lookup process. In general, it worked flawlessly.
When OS X Yosemite rolled around in late 2014, Apple decided to rip out the trusty DNS responder and replaced it with a new process called “discoveryd.”
We don’t know the exact reason for dropping it, but the replacement appeared to be related to the new Airdrop to iPhone feature that was part of the update. Apple re-wrote the discoveryd process from the ground-up in a new language, C++.
Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 16.25.15
The problems with discoveryd have been vast and unpredictable. You’ve probably run into at least one: duplicate computer names, random crashes, slow page loading, slow reconnection after sleep — the list goes on.
Apple tried on three occasions to patch out the problems, but the complaints continued to flow in. When a beta build of OS X hit 10.10.4 in May, discoveryd suddenly vanished after months with no fix.
At first, many wondered if it was an accident, but mDNSResponder had miraculously returned and has stuck around in the latest beta builds.
At WWDC we’ve learned that Apple has killed discoveryd in both iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 and mDNSResponder is back once again. When we get the updates later this year, your devices’ Wi-Fi should be a lot more reliable.
In the meantime, OS X 10.10.4, which is currently in beta, also drops discoveryd and should be available soon for download.
Apple never officially commented on why it dropped the new app (we’ve asked, again) , but the change will be a welcome one for anyone who uses its products.

Planning to get this router when I recontract with MyR, but after reading that this router has reliability issue, should I really drop the idea or is there any reliable/stable firmware to use when I got hold of this?
