Congratulations, didnt know they gave out lifetime achievement awards for access to beta firmwares!

Dear all,

I'm in need of your help, I have the RTAC87U for 3 months and was working great until just 2 days ago when the 5GHZ radio started to behave very strangly.

It began rebooting automatically and the 5GHZ Led would not light up. After a cold reboot it worked... for 1 more day.

The next day suddently rebooted itself again but when it came up the 5GHZ LED light would not light up, the LAN1 port LED blinking is really weird and it would not work anymore, LAN1 is dead.

Also the Wireless General TAB is messed up.... I can't attach a screenshot due to insufficient post counts.
The whole configuration page has all but gone,
with no tabs anywhere and just a single pane in the middle of the screen on which I
can't do anything and I have to reload the router main page in order to regain access.

I'm on firmware 3.0.0.4.378_9313

What I have tried:
3.0.0.4.378.9177, hard reset, same problem: 5 GHz radio is not ready, LAN1 port not working
3.0.0.4.378.5134, hard reset, same problem: 5 GHz radio is not ready, LAN1 port not working
3.0.0.4.378.4950, hard reset, same problem: 5 GHz radio is not ready, LAN1 port not working
3.0.0.4.378.4608, hard reset, same problem: 5 GHz radio is not ready, LAN1 port not working
now I'm back to 3.0.0.4.378_9313, hard reset, same problem: 5 GHz radio is not ready, LAN1 port not working.

I have also tried Merlin but no luck as well. Trying to telnet to the router and upon investigating I think I've found that the Quantenna is not booting. Not sure if this can be fixed or not. I'm beginning to think it's hardware related :(

I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks

Welcome as a new member to the RT-AC87U RMA club, avoid it (Quantenna) like plague.

Hi all, I just bought the 87U during SITEX show. Like to check how do you guys read the temperature of the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and CPU chipset? I looked thru the various tabs in the router settings but can't find the "performance tunning" tab..

I've already upgrade to the latest firmware. Thanks.

how to upgrade firmware now ah?

using this : 3.0.0.4.378_9177-ge585a63

when i dl the file from http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-AC87U/FW_RT_AC87U_30043789313.zip

then i unzip somewhere... then try to upload the firmware (RT-AC87U_3.0.0.4_378_9313-g53ab20f.trx) , the page says that

Firmware upgrade unsuccessful. This may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again.

I need to do what special code like up down left right a a b b to make it upgrade? :s34:

Just reboot the router and after that you should be able to upgrade it.

Hi.
I use whatsapp with no problem on FW 9366 from vanic. You use 2.4GHz or 5GHz band ? For me i test this on 2.4GHz.

Thanks. My 87U CPU is 80deg, then rfic is 67.8deg and bbic is 75deg. Guess its hot..

I'm using Cooler Master NOTEPAL X-SLIM II.

Can't hear the 200mm fan motor spinning. It's dead silence.

Before
2.4GHz = 50°C | 5GHz = 72°C | CPU = 92°C

After
2.4GHz = 42°C | 5GHz = 56°C | CPU = 65°C

I have the same cooler and I recommend it! When the room has no other noises, you can hear the fan clearly so I can't recommend it for a bedroom, it may disturb during night sleep, unless you have another sound overlapping the fan noise obviously... In my case, I have the router in the leaving room, so not really a problem for me!
I love the elevation on the back of the base, it makes the antennas higher and makes the Asus logo on the top more noticeable!

The CPU chips are being tested at 75C during functional testing. So you don't need to worry about the hot temperature.

ASUS should look at Netgear as an example in terms of cooling efficiency, the same hardware models like RT-AC68U and R7000 for example, theres a difference of 10-15º less in temperature, the same happens on other models like QSR1000 (QTN) chip on RT-AC87U and R7500, it's quite riddicullous using coolers on ASUS routers after paying the money they cost or they should already bring them as part of the package, which is also nonsense, no one should need an active cooling system on a embedded device like a router.

This has a name, it's called ASUS Quality Control Department failure.
