yes possible. ea-n66 can function as an access point, not necessarily a repeater. So you just need to connect one n66 to your media bridge, then configure your n66 as an access point..

This is brilliant!

Just one question, can both the AC-87u (media bridge) and the EA-N66 (access point) be placed side by side? Would signals be interfering with each other? Reason for asking is because of the lack of space on the table.

Much thanks!

of course there will be some sort of interference.. therefore its advisable to fix the devices on certain channels on both freq..

just bought the ac87u.

Got a question. In new BTOs,the TP is in the utility box and the whole house has structured cabling done. I will be using the gigabit TP link Wdr4900 router to be placed inside the utility box run on wired connection to my AC87U placed at another area. My ac87u will be connected to one of the LAN ports in my home that is LAN/wired connected to the TP link Wdr4900 router. The AC87u will then be my wireless AP serving the wireless connection in the home while the tplink wdr4900 serves the LAN portion in the home.

Will this setup be good? Or will my asus ac87u be bottlenecked by the tp link router? Sorry I am not too knowledgeable in this area.

I assume it will not be because the tplink router is running on gigabit ethernet to the ac87u.

New BTOs got no choice but to have 2 routers because if I just put the ac87u in the utility box as the main router serving both LAN and wireless needs, the wireless connection will be bad because the utility box has a door and will always be closed thus affecting wireless coverage.

Or I should ditch my tplink wdr4900 and place the asus ac87u inside the utility box to provide LAN connection and get another wireless AP to complement the ac87u?

First option will be better?

Advice?

I like to ask for help here... I am going to set up a new wireless network in my new home. I'm recontracting with Starhub and I'm given a new router for the network. My point of posting here is cos I am thinking of getting to ASUS RT-AC87U given from reading almost all the pages here, it seems to be really the fastest and 'bestest' router on the market now.

My questions are:

1) What brand router does Starhub give out as part of the contract?

2) I am thinking of getting two ASUS RT-AC87U routers, one to act as a bridge or something like that. Do you think that's an overkill? My flat is an executive flat so I think I need an access point.

3) If point (2) is reasonable, then what is the best way to set up the devices so that my mobile devices can seamlessly switch between the two routers? I suppose I am looking for the extension of the wireless network.

Thanks!

1) last i check it's a D-Link AC router. best is to ownself call up and ask for latest promo. and if i'm not wrong, you can ask to not receive the router and convert it to reward points instead that can help offset future bills

2) i'd suggest get 1 first and see if it's enough for your needs. if not can consider other options before getting a second 87u as that is a huge investment.

3) personally i feel that it's reasonable. i'm using starhub as well and i've turned my old n66u to a wireless repeater for the 87u (i'm aware of the bottleneck). i've connected my main desktop to the n66u via lan and set the n66u to broadcast the same ssid and password as the ac87u. it works wonderfully, the devices will just connect and switch to the stronger access point. i'd imagine it'll be even better with 2 ac87u's. but unless you transfer large files locally all the time, have a 1gbps subscription plan, or you want to satisfy your poison, yes i think it's largely overkill.

Has any one encountered this router restart itself every day ?

It is on latest firmware 2769, was reset factory default yesterday afternoon but this morning it reset itself.

How do I know it restart itself ? checking the syslog file show that time was out of sync and busybox was started.
i.e

Oct 25 07:19:19 kernel: br0: received packet on vlan1 with own address as source address
Jan 1 08:00:11 syslogd started: BusyBox v1.17.4
Jan 1 08:00:11 kernel: klogd started: BusyBox v1.17.4 (2014-08-28 16:49:27 CST)

Called customer service, just as I expected useless. She asked me to install latest firmware and reset after I told her it's already on the latest firmware and it was factory reset.

Hello Guys,

Would you be able to advice the ASUS recommended way to upgrade the RT-AC87U firmware please.
I list the following steps below which I did. Can you tell me if this is correct.

1. Save the current configuration file on local PC.
2. Download latest FW and perform FW upgrade via the Administration tab==>Firmware Upgrade
3. When the upgrade is successful, press the Reset Button for 5 sec until power light blink ( Factory Reset )
4. When reboot is completed restore back config file saved in step 1.

Thank you,
