Some info on this island from Wikipedia -

The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. The island's most notable features are the abandoned and undisturbed concrete apartment buildings and the surrounding sea wall. The island has been administered as part of Nagasaki city since the merger of the former town of Takashima in 2005.[citation needed]

It is known for its coal mines and their operation during the industrialization of Japan. Mitsubishi bought the island in 1890 and began the project, the aim of which was extracting coal from undersea mines. They built Japan's first large concrete building (9 stories high),[1] a block of apartments in 1916 to accommodate their burgeoning ranks of workers. Concrete was specifically used to protect against typhoon destruction. In 1959, the 6.3-hectare (16-acre) island's population reached its peak of 5,259, with a population density of 835 people per hectare (83,500 people/km2, 216,264 people per square mile) for the whole island, or 1,391 per hectare (139,100 people/km2) for the residential district.[2]

As petroleum replaced coal in Japan in the 1960s, coal mines began shutting down all over the country, and Hashima's mines were no exception. Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of the mine in 1974, and today it is empty and bare, which is why it is called Ghost Island.[3] Travel to Hashima was re-opened on April 22, 2009 after 35 years of closure.[4]

The guided tour costs about Japan ¥3600 per pax.

Planning to go gukanjima in December. Think there are quite a few operators providing the guided tour . gukanjima concierge, Yamasa shipping etc.. May I know which operator did you go with?

Just want to highlight to those thinking of going there from these pictures, that this is a rather restrictive tour. It is like a factory tour where you only get to see the ruins from a official tour route which was paved in cement. The route is rather short and you have to follow the tour guide and stop at designated places where they will explain the sights to the visitors. I only say this because the pictures here does not seem to show the actual reality of the guided tour quite well. I don't blame TS because when I was there, I also avoided taking photos of the tour guides and the other tourists walking up and down the same official route as it wasn't anything interesting.

Nevertheless, the tour is still quite interesting from a Singaporean perspective as nowhere will us get to see highrise apartment flats left to rot until this state here in Singapore. Imagine if Singapore is being abandoned like how it has happened to Hashima. What do you think this place will look like?

that restriction is mainly because the structural integrity of the buildings are not ensured
