SamKnows - Measures Singapore Broadband Performance

SamKnows aim to provide Singapore with reliable and accurate statistics of broadband performance across Singapore.

Volunteers will receive a purpose-built broadband measurement unit which can be plugged into the existing modem/router. This is called the SamKnows Whitebox.

For user portal, the timezone is not set to SG. Testers do take note.

FYI, the whitebox (router) unit should be kept turn-on at all time for 2 years according to SamKnows. So if you're not running your network 24x7 then this project is not suitable for you.

Hehehe... Interestingly, the tests/measurements only kick in when traffic is under 25kB/s down and under 8 kB/s up.

That is a very low threshold... looks like i must set scheduling on my utorrent to allow time for the test to be performed.

if the test is performing half way, you start to surf net/downloading.
will the test stop/pause ? if not, how much bandwidth does it consume ?

your concern is the opposite of mine as i seed a few selected private torrent and thus traffic is consistently being generated thats way above the testing threshold. This means in my network.. the whitebox would become the white elephant.

Based on 3 days of monitoring results, seems like Video Streaming of SuperInternet isn't that good.

Definition of not that good is "inconsistency" and "wide range of buffering time - between 1.44s and 3.74s".

Here are the results captured:

2012-04-14 15:00:00 2.12 0.00 5
2012-04-14 09:00:00 1.44 0.00 7
2012-04-14 03:00:00 1.82 0.00 7
2012-04-13 10:00:00 3.74 0.00 1
2012-04-13 09:00:00 - - 2
2012-04-13 03:00:00 1.92 0.00 7

Most of these hours are when I am not at home and most likely no or low usage of the fiber connection.

What's your failed DNS queries? StarHub MIF is 100% fail, but no issue with surfing. :s13:
