After reading this thread, I went to Sim Lim Tower (LHS Electronics - Level 2) to purchase Belden Cat 6 cables today.

LHS is an interesting shop because they don't display their cables in pre-cut lengths in packets like other shops. Their cables are stored in reels and they cut the cables according to customer's length, grade and crimp requirements. I waited about 45 min as they had to cope with existing orders (there were two technicians in their stations). I noticed some of the cable lengths of other customers were much longer than mine, confirming that they have regular clientele. There were also 2 or 3 other customers who dropped by just to buy fixed cable lengths for their home internet setup. They knew exactly what they wanted and seemed quite pro (compared to us newbies).

I went upstairs and downstairs and checked out other SLT shops' Cat 6 cables. Most of them sold unbranded cables, for about the same or higher price than LHS. One shop sold TE Cat 6 for about 300% higher price than LHS. It seemed like inconsistent pricing and quality so I'm sure that some people who bought unbranded cables would be disappointed when they went home.

LHS charged me $1 per metre and $5 for crimping the ends of each cable.

NOW FOR THE RESULTS

I tested out the Belden Cat 6 this afternoon with the following results:

1. Wifi (60Mbps)
2. Cat 5e (no name brand, 1m long) (180Mbps):)
3. Cat 6 (Belden brand, 10m long) (224Mbps)

Hope this helps.

So where in SLT can I get an actualy Cat 5E/6 cable?

I went and got a "Cat 5E" at SLS at $14 for 20m and all I get is 90 Mbps.

I couldn't careless whether it's Cat 5E or Cat 6 since they both should be able to go to 1 Gbps, but it's kinda hard to identify a cable with genuine quality.

if you are lazy to go down to buy & stay around AMK, YCK, Hougang, Sengkang, you can get it online also from MARIX, Belden CAT 6 is $1 per metre, crimp both end with AMP NetConnect Jacks @ $5 also. Just order the cables and state that you want it crimp, they will crimp it for you and charge you the differences of $5 when you go to collect it.

So far, I noticed they do give extra length abit.

Matrix cable. Is the quality good or same as Belden? those challenger Cat 6 cables looks like Cat 5e.

I have a cat 6 cables at home, the cable is hard n tough while cat 5e is softer

AMP cat6 UTP cable is thinner than belden and easier to crimp than belden. In datacentre, i would use amp over Belden due to thickness of cables. You will also find jack sleeves harder to insert into belden over amp or 3m

AMP cat 6 cables same as Matrix or 2 differents brands? :s8:

For the LHS electronics at Sim Lim Tower, after they help u crimp, do they also have the jack sleeve? Is jack sleeve the one the surround the ethernet ends ?

Technically, if all cables truly conform to Cat6 standards, they should all perform the same when used in reasonable environments.

Bought 5M Daiyo cables from challenger at JEM. Forgotten 5E/6, but it's one of them. It's able to push through 300Mbps for my connection :)

there are 2 types cat 6 and 5e. I'm also considering Daiyo cables from Challenger. 2 different cats. What's your plan ? 300mbps plan ?

Yes. I do not see an error with my post with regards to 5E/6, I do know they are different. I am on 300Mbps - MyRepublic.

Make my trip just now down to LHS at Sim Lim Tower.

requested for a 6m Cat 6 Belden cable at $11.
Still cheaper than Challenger which is selling 5m Cat 6 Daiyo at $16.90.
Also bought a 60cm cat 6 cable too for ONT to Router.

gotta try later see the speeds. Quality looks good, better than those challenger stuffs
