ASUS: World's First Liquid Cooled Laptop

By: James Ong

With much thanks to Asus, I was privileged enough to be given a chance to give a test run on their latest beast – the ASUS GX700. After a week of testing this massive machine, this review is my thoughts and feelings based on my personal experiences.

What makes this laptop stand out amongst others?

• World's first liquid-cooled laptop!

• Overclockable mobile processor! Intel® Core™ i7-6820HK @2.70GHz

• Desktop class graphics card! NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX980

• 2x M.2 256GB SSDs in Raid 0! (Do note that the test set that I received comes with 2x 512GB SSDs instead but the ones sold locally will only come with 2x 256GB SSDs)

• 32GB of DDR4 RAM! (Do note that the test set I received came with 64GB of RAM instead but the ones sold locally will only come with 32GB of RAM)

Ok, now that you're done wiping that drool off your face, let’s have a look at this gaming monster.

The GX700 is a certified beast – catered for hardcore gamer/ enthusiast who knows that for most parts, they will be gaming within the comfort of their home. With the laptop and dock weighing 3.6kg and 4.8kg respectively, you wouldn't fancy lugging around this beast to your overnight LAN party although ASUS is indeed kind enough to provide you with a snazzy luggage for ease of transport.

You know ASUS meant serious business when you unbox the beast, with the amount of thick foam used to shield the machine from external shock and impact.

First impressions

I felt like I was living in a moment of Star trek when I was docking the laptop into the cooling dock, the whole setup looks sleek and futuristic, making me rock out my inner geek. The GX7 features an all-aluminum bio-armor design with titanium and plasma copper, a very welcoming change from the usual black and red color scheme that is proliferated over gamer laptops.

Now that I’m settled into my cockpit, let’s take this beast for a spin and see how this baby rolls. I’ve done some benchmarking via Firestrike and PCMark8 in Home, Creative and Work. Below are the scores from the benchmark as well as the temperature of the laptop at rest.

1qmxlJ4.jpg

Very impressive scores from the GX700, while it still isn’t as powerful as dual GTX980m in SLI, it is still a very powerful machine that runs most games smoothly. And there is a clear difference in the performance that you can expect out of the machine when it is docked into the Hydro Cooling System. With an automated overclocking system, the GX700 will automatically boost the CPU when the laptop is docked. Fuss-free. No need to crack your heads over tutorials and trials to squeeze all the juice out of your CPU.

Last words

Overall, I was extremely satisfied with the performance of the laptop. It gave me the necessary power that I want out of my gaming machine, while the dip in performance is manageable for me to bring the laptop around. Retailing at S$6198, it’s a world-class seductress at work. :D

Over the past year, laptop manufacturers have been innovating tremendously on laptop features, from integrating mechanical keyboards to having an upgradable graphics card.

Asus is no doubt stepping up their game by introducing the new GX700.

eoHNhxj.jpg

Specs:

The Asus GX700 is powered by the latest generation Intel® Core™ i7-6820HK; it is one of the few overclockable Intel mobile processors.

The configuration I received from Asus Singapore is one with a whopping 32GB of the latest DDR4 RAM overclockable up to 2800 MHz.

As this is a gaming laptop, one of the most important components in a gaming laptop would be the graphics processor.

Asus has you covered on this laptop! The GX700 features a desktop grade NVIDIA® GeForce® a GTX 980 – not a GTX 980M. A desktop quality graphics card on a laptop! Even the most demanding games today wouldn’t be an issue for this beast!

vtew1m5.jpg

Design:

The laptop looks awesome – it has a silver-champagne color scheme on the outer case with the conventional ‘gaming colors’ of red and black on the interior. This color combination really makes the GX700 stand out from other gaming laptops.

Display:

The review unit I got was the one with an Anti-Glare Full HD IPS display with G-Sync running at 75Hz.

The G-Sync display performs exceptionally well. As you all already know, Witcher 3 is an extremely demanding game, frame rates may drop below 60 at times, but with the G-Sync display, overall gameplay looks extremely smooth!

jv7hiVO.jpg

Keyboard and Touchpad:

The GX700 features a full sized chiclet styled, Anti-Ghosting and backlit keyboard with num-pad and arrow keys. Typing on the Asus GX700 was a great experience: the keys were solid and don’t wobble at all when pressed. They have good spacing and the rubber palm rest really enhances the overall experience by giving a nice soft sensation when typing.

Audio:

Audiophiles aren’t left out! The GX700 comes with a ESS Sabre headphone DAC. In my experience, it really makes a difference! The DAC can be turned on in the ROG Gaming Centre. With the DAC turned on, music sounds more crisp and clear with well controlled bass.

The built-in speakers are great for a laptop! It is also super loud and clear. Bass is definitely present as there is a subwoofer at the bottom. Asus includes an app that lets you adjust sound settings such as Bass and Voice with profiles included depending on your usage.

Storage:

The GX700 comes with 2 256GB NVMe PCIe SSDs running in RAID0, this makes the already super-fast M.2 SSDs even faster! With speeds of up to 2GB/s, Battlefield 4 loaded within seconds – loading games is definitely going to be a thing of the past!

Is it worth it?

There is no doubt the Asus GX700 is a very powerful laptop with desktop-class components – throw any game & it will handle it. However, at the price of $6198, Asus is targeting this product at a niche market.

Recently I have had the honour of being at the launch of the world's first water-cooling laptop, the ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) GX700. Now this is a feature never before seen in any laptop. Before the event, I was wondering how the terms "water-cooling" and "laptop" would ever go together, but after the event I felt this makes perfect sense to the hard-core gamer who wants to push his gaming to the (extreme!) limits.

Comes with a free luggage case!

The Asus ROG GX700 is one insane-looking water-cooled laptop equipped with Intel's first overclockable i7-6820HK mobile CPU and a desktop-class NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980 GPU. It is also equipped with a pair or RAID-0 M.2 SSDs and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. Thanks to the water-cooling dock, you'll be able to push both the CPU and GPU to the limits for a frag-fest.

Let's take a look at the design of the laptop, which differentiates itself from its competitors with its new Armor Titanium and Plasma Copper coloured accents. The matte black texture at the palm rest and keyboard feels cool to the touch and is comfortable and I absolutely adore the metallic finishing on the frame of the laptop. It is definitely a refreshing change from the usual all-black gaming laptops you see in the market. The build is neat and sturdy, giving you the feel of a premium product. I liken its sleek design and build to a Lamborghini and that's just an understatement. The laptop doesn’t have a flex, which makes it a solid build.

The notebook has a separate water-cooling module that connects to the back for an instant boost in overclocking. The GX700 can of course autonomously run without it, albeit with diminished performance. Inside is a red backlit full-sized keyboard which is one of the most tactile I've used. There is good depth for the keys and no loose bits.

Asus claims that the liquid cooling module will boost the ROG GX700's GPU and CPU performance quite significantly by about 40% plus. As a high-end gaming laptop, the GX700 is also equipped with G-Sync, which helps to reduce input lag and screen tearing by synchronizing the GPU's refresh rate with the display.

Getting a 9K score in 3DMark is a huge upgrade for me, considering I only get about 2.7K on my own GTX950M laptop.

For a 17" gaming laptop, its weight is decent at 3.6kg and 38.5mm at its thickest. ASUS has clearly designed a winner here and managed to strike a fine balance between portability and performance. Its price may be on the high side at $6.2k and have limited appeal to a niche audience with deep pockets, but if sheer overclocking performance in a sleek package is what you are looking for as an enthusiast, this is the holy grail of laptops. Look no further.

Asus ROG GX700. Liquid-cooled… wait what?

By: Zhao Yue

A price tag of $6198 might appear discouraging – but you must ask yourself if portability and performance matters - not that you’d see these two words in the same sentence every day. With ASUS ROG GX700 Liquid-cooled Gaming Laptop, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Nestled within the sleek chassis is an Intel® Core™ i7-6820HK and a NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX™ 980. They’ve chosen a lethal combo of an unlocked multiplier K-SKU Skylake processor and a desktop-grade GTX980 to make this machine rival gaming desktops.

It is liquid-cooled when attached to a futuristic-looking dock that looks like something Tony Stark would approve. The dock holds the dual 90mm radiators with fans. ASUS has developed the closed loop docking system to be extremely spill-resistant when docking or undocking. The system will be notified in an event where the coolant levels in the reservoir are running low.

The drawback to all these is its size and weight – this isn’t a gaming laptop that’s going to bag any lightweight awards. The dock is 4.8kg and the laptop itself weighs 3.6kg. I’m interested to find out how the performance will fare when undocked as I don't foresee myself lugging the dock around wherever I’m going.

8U7ni3k.jpg

The scores for 3DMark Firestrike stands at 9219 (undocked) and 11383 (docked). That’s a 23% increase in performance! When docked, it ramps up the CPU clock speed to 4.0GHz and the graphics memory from 2133MHz to 2800MHz. With the liquid-cooler preventing thermal throttling, it can endure higher temperatures and sustain clock speeds.

Comparatively, my home desktop runs at 5960X 8 Core CPU and a GTX770 gets 7906 points in 3DMark Firestrike.

HPBnyjA.png

In CINEBENCH R15, another popular benchmark, the scores were 725cb undocked and 875cb docked.

Another amazing feature is that it comes with a G-Sync capable display, eliminating stuttering and tearing of the graphics as the frame rates fall and rise above the monitor's native refresh rate. With G-Sync, the monitor’s refresh rate matches to the fps when playing games – it was invigorating.

Aside from being a gamer, I’m a photographer/videographer therefore color accuracy and performance is crucial to editing photos and videos. I measured a 94% coverage of the SRGB Color Space using a Spyder4ELITE Display Calibrator, which is sufficient and thanks to its amazing dual Samsung SM951 PCI-E m.2 SSD running in RAID 0, editing a 4K footage was a breeze. Amazed, I ran CrystalDiskMark to see what kind of speeds this raid array offered.

OrUMSls.png

A blazing 3255mb/s and 2512mb/s for sequential read and write respectively. To put things in perspective, two Samsung 850 Pro SSDs in RAID 0 would achieve 1069mb/s and 1036mb/s for read and write. This performance is outstanding and made program loading and boot-up time super-fast!

Overall, this 3.6kg beastly laptop might be heavy but you can be assured that you will get desktop-like gaming performance whenever needed. Plug it into the dock and it transforms into a super-machine, which is more than ready to be a desktop replacement.
