Hi all,

my desktop of 8 years died over the weekend and i'm looking to replace it. My dead rig setup is:
INTEL CORE I5-4570 3.20 GHZ QUAD CORE PROCESSOR
ASROCK B85M-PRO4 SOCKET 1150
8GB Ram
1TB Western Digital HDD
240GB SSD

I have around 1k budget to purchase a rig that can perform intense multi tasking. i use it for:

1. multi tasking apps (alot of surfing; need alot of tabs open at once, MS applications, discord, slack, watching movies and listening to music etc)
2. dont really game now, so dont think i need a graphic card
3. will be reusing my old rig dvd writer, PSU, SSD & HDD so will save some cost there. Would be purchasing a new casing thou, my old own is rusty.

really appreciate your recommendations. TIA!

PS: Is fortran still the guy to approach for people to fix their rig?

4th gen was release like 5 yrs ago, how is it 8 yrs old?? And could you define which part is dead? Perhaps changing that particular part can help salvage the rest.

i did some upgrades along the way. i upgraded my graphics card and motherboard after 4 years.

i sent the rig to diagnosed, results not out yet. Likely is the motherboard or graphics card that died. so thinking that it is so old, i am considering to get a whole new rig.

What you are describing is not really multi tasking, but I'd suggest a Ryzen with 16-32Gb RAM

32GB of RAM will be around $500, which wouldn't leave much for the rest of your rig.

I5-8400 is a good choice. Passmark of 12k plus with - cores at a very decent price performance point. Can't go wrong with it. :)

I dont need very intensive one i think.
Would i5 8400 be a better choice?
