erm yes... I created a folder and just drag and drop thefiles. I was told when I bought that it is that easy? haha

Please share a folder from Synology, mount to your Windows system and access files through that method. It's faster and better.

thanks again! Trying it out! :)

What other functions do you guys use? I understand Plex cannot be used on DS413, so I installed Synology Media Server. I left out Logitech Media Server - is it a good choice?

Or what other alternative media server do you guys use?

Try the Radius Server. Configure your router to use Enterprise WPA2 instead of Personal WPA2. That means each user to the wireless network can have his/her own username and password. The user assignment is done on my nas instead. That means you need your NAS on 24by7, which is fine with me. If you are not going to do that, then don't do it this way.

There a lot of other functionalities, running your own blog, own wiki, own web server. No harm trying out things and learn some new fun stuffs along the way.

When using Radius server, the downside I can foresee immediately is device compatibility, which for a home user will be a deal breaker!

For offices it's immediately apparent why you need 802.1x authentication

1) Most importantly prevents users on the same access point from listening to each other. Because there is no common key, a user will not be able to decrypt over the air WiFi signals from other users.

2) Flexibility to change access credentials as you please. This is critical in an office for example, if an employee quits the company, simply remove his login or if you suspect his login has been compromised. Does not affect everyone else.

In terms of security, the extra keying helps to improve an already very secure WPA2 AES encryption so I can't say it will help your home out if you are already using a very complex passphrase.

What do you guys think?

May I ask where is the deal breaker ? All modern laptops today can authenticate via Enterprise WPA2. All my iOS devices (except the AppleTV) can authenticate via Enterprise WPA2. Is there android devices that cannot, perhaps it's good to know.

If you already have the NAS and its running 24by7 and setting it up is a breeze, what is the disadvantage, besides the probable device incompatibility, and the dependency on the NAS ?

If there is any essential devices that a consumer has that cannot be connected to Enterprise WPA2, then don't use it. If all the devices can, what is the deterrent ?

Hi guys, I am been reading the thread from page 1. Recently, I bought a 3TB red for my antique dlink DNS-343 and realize that it cannot be use and the maximum it can accept is 2TB HDD. Now I got 3x1TB in the NAS, I am contemplating switching to Synology 413/413j. Should I be waiting got the IT how on June and which model will be a good fit for my usage?

Yes, please wait for the IT fair. The prices there usually the lowest.

And just a quick check, I am running RAID5 on 3x1TB on my dns-343. If I will to plug it into the new synology, will it work or I have to backup and totally do a fresh installation.

Which NAS is currently good enough for running Plex and transcoding 1080p videos?

My primary use would be store documents/photos/videos/audio files, followed by streaming via Plex

My NAS Options

so I"m looking to get a NAS (x 4 bay) so that I can rip out my existing 3.5inches (x3) from my PC to fit into it. The disks are all of different sizes (500g,500g,1T) so I'm wondering if it would be as simple of just removing and plugging into the NAS? I've no intention to run RAID or anything as the main purpose of this is to free up space within my PC casing.

next I'll also like to know my options in terms of attaching that NAS to my Home network.

1) I can either attached it via USB to my PC or;
2) attached it to my Apple Air Port Extreme (via USB) with subsequent access via Wifi.

as with Option 1 I understand that file transfer would be quicker since it would either be connected using LAN or USB however are there any NAS devices that come with Wifi so that even when my PC is off I can access it from my other devices?

Kind of new to NAS storage so would appreciate advise.

budget - ~500-650 bucks.

Currently looking @ either the Synology DS413 or J variant.

cheers

Any recommendations looking for 2 bay. Must be fast, stable and secure. Budget roughly $400.

Purpose: Same as dropbox, Drive and etc.
But using own server with security.

I currently have a buffalo linkstation quad and its speed for copying is quite slow.

I am looking to upgrade. Been reading the posts and still considering:

Some things to consider when buying a new 4 bay NAS

1) Amount of Gb Ethernet ports and can they be trunked/agregated? This means can have 2Gb instead of one if your PC or switch or router supports this also.
2) What kind of interfaces?
Hopefully USB 3 & eSata
3) Kind of CPU and # cores?
4) speed of transfer
5) kind of OS /GUI

Seems like there are several choices worth considering, according to the reviews. Synology, QNAP, etc

Any input is welcome.
