PSU recommendation for Silverstone CS380

Transfering my existing desktop components to a new Silverstone CS380.

Just realised current PSU Seasonic M12-500II (9 years old) may not be sufficient after talking to Seasonic & silverstone distributors.

Seasonic said 850, Silverstone said 1200.

Which one should I be getting?

My current PC components
Processor - Intel I7 4770K
Mainboard - gigabyte z97x-ud5h-bk
Storage - 5 harddrives & 1 SSD & 1 DVD rom
Graphics Card - ASUS GTX 670 DirectCU II
Memory - 16 GB corsair vengeance
Audio - Auzen X-Fi Prelude 7.1

I am looking for quiet PSU (but not fanless). Any recommendation?

corbell (seasonic) & avertek (silverstone).

Just to clarify, the PSU should be seasonic x-650 (3 years old)

Actually Corbell the guy was pretty helpful, he said base on the x-650 should be ok. He was concern on the graphic card needing extra pins for power though when i mention the model.
He said to try boot with 2 or 3 hard drive first then observe for a week before putting more.
Avertek though said 1200 base on 1TB x 8 disk. He did mention also depend on the power each disk require. So I told them my components as posted + 3 fans. I was told to get 1200W

My concern is just wanted to know whether I need to upgrade the X-650. Best is can still use.

I dont OC. So your opinon is will be fine to stick to x-650?

ive done 6 hdds and 3 ssds and a bluray drive all on a 750w mate that now is close to 8years old. i think the 1200w is way overrecommended/overkill.

Last i rememeber years ago that that kinda power psu was usually geared towards those that use to do sli/crossfire with 2-3 gpus. Your build seems way redundant to use 1200w.

Also i remember being told not to get too powerful a psu as its lifespan is affected if u do not maximise its components efficiently aka you only consume a small portion of its rated wattage.

I cant remember the exact percentage but i recall someone mention to me something like aim for a psu where your daily usage tends use up at least 50-60% percent of its projected wattage so as to not let the components sort of be under utilized. Dont quote me on the % but it was old advice.

it was a r9 290 pcs+ but changed to 1060. the 290 drew much more power i believe.

Due to a space I may need t get another graphic card ( around 26cm) I was thinking of getting a mid range card RX580.

if you haven't realize, you will see that the "recommended" power retailers and brands give is always way more than what is required. It is just to play safe. Quite similar to idea of SRP (and people selling lower than that). Just a suggestion only.



For example the graphics card box min power supply you will see is always very very high, much higher than anything that is required.

Yes, I can understand retailers/distro wanting to have a safe power margin, but to recommend 1.2kW when TS isn't even running SLI is way way way overkill. Tradepac style upselling in my book.

At least Corbell had some common sense to tell TS his current 650W would probably be fine. Avertek meanwhile suggested double that. And before anyone accuses me of favouring Corbell, I am using an Avertek power supply that is now out of warranty (Silverstone SFX-L 500W)

Call avertek for clarification on my silverstone casing.
Answer is generic & tend to taichi to other product distributor as if they can wash their hands of the issue

me: How much watt it require to power the 2 molex on the hotswap bay & if I could use a single psu cable.
avertek: you need to ask Corbell if a single psu cable can supply the power.

There were other question but answer is basically the same patten. Could be the same guy on the phone. The tone & attitude of his voice make me want to slap him.

Horrendous tech support.

Corbell, was so much more understanding, try to access my situation & gave me a more practical advise.

One thing though, the indian guy from avertek was kind & helpful.

Your setup is quite similar to mine. I'm on 4770/32GB/GTX1070FE/3xSSD/3xHDD and all these on a eVGA 650W P2.

Chill la. 650W... Even if i change to a 2700X or 9900K with RTX2080Ti, still got enough juice to run.
