How to optimise internet speed

Hi all,

I recently subscribed to 1Gbps plan with MyRepublic for my new BTO. My current setup is with my Orbi RBK50 is as follow:

TP -> ONT -> Port -> Orbi Main Router (Living Room) with Mesh to my satellite.

No issue with getting 5Ghz in my MBR however base on speed test for my wireless network in living room, the highest i am able to achieve was close to 300Mbps download speed and 470~ Mbps upload speed constant which i felt is far less than what my other neighbor with the same ISP in the same estate is getting.

Is there something wrong with my setup and any suggestion/ advice on how can i better improve my connection to achieve better wireless speed? And how much should i actually be getting on wireless.

use wifi 6 if u can. i think you're at the limit of wireless ac alr.

The test device that you using might also limit your speedtest result.

You can do a internal network test buy running iperf on your windows/mac as a server.

And run Iperf app on ios/android phone.

From Orbi main to satellite is over Wi-Fi ?

You can try improve the speeds slightly by getting the satellite close to the main router.

But based on the specs of RBK50 and depending your devices, max is likely no higher than 500++ Mbps, lower on satellite if it's on wireless backhaul.

I doubt so :/ My neighbour from other block is getting approx 700+ close to 800Mbps while on Wifi and we both are subscribed to MR and using Orbi RBK50

Actually my main router and satellite quite close already, just separated by 2 partition wall only

At your speeds, I would say it is quite a good speed already. The problem with wifi is that there are too many uncontrollable variables. For example, wireless congestion and interference are a common issue which degrades wifi quality.

Like yourself, somehow, I get slower wifi speeds in my own home, as compared to my parents place. Even when using the same wireless router to test.

When using mesh systems like Orbi, the advantage of this is that it already has an inbuilt software to allow auto-tweaking of the settings to provide you with the best possible wifi experience. In the science of wireless, its about the balance and the trade-offs of speed-stability-bandwidth-range.

I wouldn't worry too much if you are getting speeds at what you have now. They are within a good range in fact.

MR upload is limited to only 500mbps. They are the only isp that do not have symmetric up/down speed.
Hence your 470mbps is very good already.

O wow this is something new that i didn't read while signing the contract with MR

Anyway just to get some advices from the experts here, i got a free router from MR with my sign up however i already have the Orbi RBK50 as my router. To setup a backhaul ethernet for my Orbi satellite, can i go with the following setup

TP -> ONT -> MR Free Router (Wireless Off, acting as switch) -> Port 1 to Orbi Router and Port 2 to Orbi Statellite

Or is it necessary to connect from ONT to Orbi Router first for the backhaul ethernet to work?

if you just want extra ports then connect to router instead and set to ap and disable wireless
