Yeah that's a fact most appeal applicants are privy to, but it's better to read something that one is interested in rather than getting into a university just for the sake of it? If all else fails, retake I guess :/

The way I see it, you are just getting into university for the namesake of it.
Most of the courses you applied for, has almost no demand in the workforce. Most graduates from those courses end up working in some field not related at all. The extra years you wasted, you couldve gotten career progression and gotten similar pay to the starting pay of those who chose to take a useless degree in a prestigious uni.

You say SIM sch fees expensive. You didn't realise you couldve earned a huge portion(definitely sufficient to cover the difference between local uni and sim) the 1 or 2 yrs you wasted restudying a lvls.
You can also take up Moe bursary for sim now iirc, and work parttime since sim timetable quite relaxed, total no of yrs for graduation also shorter.
If ur gonna keep retaking alvls and keep reaplying just to accept any pretentious degrees offered to you by local unis, ur better off taking a useful sim degree.
Heck, ur better off taking a diploma if ur gonna waste 2yrs retaking a lvls.

If its just to prove a point to people in ur life, I suggest you reconsider your life choices lol.

Lol first of all I hope you would stop assuming things about me, I've always been interested in English and know that is what I want to study. All of my choices for the local universities correlate with that fact, I'm not just choosing them just because they have low rp or whatever you think. Even my choice to not enter private universities have half to do with them not offering arts degrees that I'm interested in.

You're free to have an opinion on arts degrees but you don't have the right to shove your opinions down others' throats, they may be pretentious to you but they sure aren't pretentious to the hundreds who chose to major in them. And you sure as hell don't have the right to tell me what to do with my life.

Good and bye.

Hello, based on what you have said, if you are not choosing to only enter NTU because of the name, why not consider SUSS? You said you are not interested in entering private universities because they do not offer the degrees that you want. However, SUSS, a local university, has many part-time degree courses in English, English Lit, English with Psych and many others. Are you not interested in those? Studying part-time can allow you to work and gain experiences while at the same time help you afford your school fees. Furthermore, SUSS is now government-owned and they have amazing subsidies for local students. Their school fees, as stated on the website, is on par with other local universities. Why would you rather retake your A levels than to enter SUSS?

Do visit the SUSS website to see the list of English programmes offered under their School of Arts and Social Sciences if you are really interested in English!

Hope this helps!

Friend with same subject combi as me and exact same rp got rejected by SUSS way before NTU rejected her, her appeal was also unsuccessful. I wager chances are also slim.

Edit: Aren't admissions closed now though? In any case I would have to apply next year, not much different from retaking??

Need to take big loan probably + they don't have many arts majors (mostly just comms, sociology, economics and psychology) :(

Aiya can try suss pt courses what.. Unlike ft course it's easier to get in.. Furthermore it's now the 6th gov funded local uni..

Their next intake is in January 2018. Applications will close this September. If you were really interested in English no matter which university, you would have checked their website. Everything is stated there.

You can try suss part time courses what? Why must waste your time retaking. Do not be too picky with the courses..You are in a extremely unfavourable situation where you are only allowed to select the courses that you qualify based on your rank points and not select courses based on your interest. Suss is also a fairly recognised degree. If you are worried about the fees, you can always apply for loans or financial aids.

Sorry thought you meant the normal degree. Checked the part time degree out and it seems OK, lower school fees too. I'll try applying, thanks!

Private universities like SUSS (now govt owned) have numerous English-related courses, did you browse through the website to check? Why must you be so fixated with the local universities, NUS and NTU, when you do not have sufficient academic abilities to enter? You can always consider other options, like SUSS which is now named as "Social Sciences", will definitely has many courses you are keen in? Do not be so choosy as you are not in the position to choose which university you prefer.
Do you even bother to browse through the list of courses offered by SUSS part time degree? Or you just strike off from your choices just because it is a private university? I guess at this juncture, where you can't get accepted into any courses, you have no right to look down on private universities, but be humble and accept the available options that you have.

Unless you can be like Louie, able to score well in A levels after retaking, then by mean go ahead. If you think you are not suited for the rigour of the A level syllabus, then I suggest you not to retry again, because the end result would be the same..

Uhhh I never said I looked down on private universities??? And SUSS is not private anyway. Please stop putting words in my mouth.
Before when I checked out all of the universities I didn't look at part time degrees and all private unis don't have arts degrees, specifically English or lit-related (SIM GE, James Cook, Curtin etc I checked all).

And I can retake just H1 instead of all of my subjects iirc

Is that why there seems to be some kind of stigma surrounding retaking?

As mentioned by MrSinkie95, really if you do not do well the 2nd try, you will be a complete total loss on what to do next. It is not a stigma, or discouraging you from retaking, but providing you cautious advice on whether to retake.

If you fail the second time, your morale will be severely affected.. And among those who repeat, how many percent have the discipline to dilligently study and do well for As? How many of them can employ the correct study method? And since the first try, they did not score well, what makes you think they will do well the 2nd try? (Without the assistance of school, teachers, peers, school exams, pressures, etc.)
So it is a reality, not many can do well the 2nd try, unless they are dilligent, employed the correct study method, and probably some luck, then they will succeed the 2nd try.

Hahaa u came here to sought for advices and when ppl offer it; opposite of urs, u seem to be very defensive?

My 2 cents
I wasn't even seeking advice! I just answered that I would retake if my appeal doesn't go through and people come in and tell me I'm only choosing English because of local university namesake etc etc
Go back and look at my posts, did I ask "what should I do?" or the like, No because I am clear what my options are if my appeal isn't successful.

Can we stop spamming the thread and go back to sharing about application/appeal outcome and related topics?

Yup, I also feel reishi is so arrogant, people are giving advices, but he/she is not grateful, but keep rebutting back.. If I were getting such scores, I would humbly accept the feedbacks and take the most appropriate path.
