Long thread-(1) “It does feel like war.” The scale of confrontations in CUHK on Tue even surprised some frontline protesters. Sky is one.
“There could be about 2000 protesters near the bridge, and in the night..and we have to ask some to stay back a bit. It really is a first.”
(2)The 23year-old is not a CUHK grad, but came to campus to join the fight, including hurling petrol bombs at police.
The landscape in campus, he believed, has created level-playing field vs police. "In the past, we could only take defence & run away from riot police or raptors."
(3)Sky has not gone home for 3 days. He ate, bathed and slept in campus, getting clothes and supplies from citizens.
“There will be ‘parents’ bringing supplies, necessities, and materials to make petrol bombs," he said, referring to the supportive crowd.
(4)Sky's parents in real life hv separated when he's young. Born in mainland, he came to HK with his mother at 3.
“I would even confess myself a Chinese,” he said. “I received edu in HK, I know this place the best, and I don’t want to see any young ppl injured or arrested."
(5)"I feel I would rather be the one to take the price.” Sky said he's not afraid of death, which is sentiment among some protesters at frontline. He felt he has nothing to lose. He has not gone home for days, telling his mother he's staying at his friends' place.
(6)Sky is not a radical from day one. He joined the first massive rally in June and July 21. The change happened as he witnessed the indiscriminate attack by mobs in Yuen Long station.
“It just felt ridiculous when two police officers just let the mobs go, right in front of me."
(7) Fuelled with frustration and anger, he then became one in black-cad in every protests, & never hesitated to throw bricks or petrol bombs at officers. He has once been arrested for once in possession of a pair of goggles, but freed on police bail.
(8) While he and other frontline protesters felt they could put up a fight in CUHK, the deepest fair in them is to take command from someone to decide from the tactic. They feel that everyone choose what's the best strategy under the the same common goal.
(9) It's unclear what's next for them- whether to carry on, or to leave.
But the plan for now is to "blossom everywhere", extending similar protests near other universities campus in order to put pressure on police's manpower.
