US was formed starting with 13 British colonies then adding of states through Louisiana purchase and war with Mexico in the Southwest then co-opt of Texas which used to be an independent country, not under any other country.

The civil war was between the North vs South about the freeing of African slaves. The civil war was not what formed the US. The victory of the north prevented the split between the confederate South and Union North. It was not what formed or united the states.
