A U.S. Army howitzer successfully engaged a simulated cruise missile, shooting it down with a projectile traveling at Mach 5. The howitzer crew was assisted by a new U.S. Air Force battle management system. The test is the result of a Pentagon program designed to take existing weapon systems and modify them to take on new and important roles.

The intercept took place at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. In a key test for the Air Force’s Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS), B-52 bombers launched six BQM-167 “Skeeter’ aerial targets. The “Skeeters” served as a stand-in for a salvo of low-flying cruise missiles.

Air Force sensors detected the “cruise missiles” and then provided targeting data to a F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter and MQ-9 Reaper drone equipped with AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, a ground launcher, a U.S. Navy 5-inch deck gun, and U.S. Army M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzer.

The chinese has a tank version with greater fire power to penetrate tanks, rapid firing on the move and able to handle the anti-tank avaition cluster bombs

it hit onto the missile if i am not wrong. it is precision aiming via the refitted high tech sensor and the AI chip in precision calculation, calculating the angle of engagement, the point it need to fire and the direction it has to travel.

a typical tank shell travels at 2km per second.

much faster than many missiles. u seen a tank fired a round before? its fast.

This is why space force is important. If China take down satellites all the tech become paperweights.

A bit confused with the article, so the target was Mach 5 or the projector the Paladin fired was Mach 5?

Because Skeeter target drones are sub-sonic aircrafts, just like most cruise missiles (some even slower than the Skeeter).

Not trying to downplay the tech, but it's going to be a lot harder to shoot down supersonic or hypersonic missiles which everyone seems to be developing. Last I heard, some countries were designing cruise missiles that could avoid AA systems.

Urmmm...we are in the age of Hypersonic missiles. Russia just implemented such a missile that travels at Mach 20. There is no missile defense system against such missiles.

China is next and US is in 3rd position, only likely ready in mid 2020s.

I think it is likely why US said their support of annexation for Israel is 2024 at the earliest.

for a APFSDS round its fast. your eyes can't really see it flying......
but for a HE round, you can see its entire fly path.
