Everytime I watch that scene, I ask why US don't want to use a big bullet proof large shield when they step out of that boat? First 3 ppl hold the shield for the group.

And why they don't want land at night when visibility is poor...

you use a shield, you become a target, with all the bullets raining down on your shield, you can't even move.

That time kevlar not yet invented, metal is too limited & precious wartime commodity to be used for such one-time use, not to mention very heavy to use while treading over wet sands and may not last longer under constant mg fire

That time GPS not yet invented. Got paratroopers deployed the night before, all scattered all over the shop

When one bullet hit your shield, you will fly... You must understand the impact of the MG.

Actually in reality the Germans are not directly infront of the ramp powered launch (RPL).

all the MGs in defensive positions were emplaced in an arc of fire so that they have a wider coverage and the landing soldiers would be short from an angle than from the front.

This also gave the germans an advantage so they can't be shot from the front.

Any shield would not be effective.

Landing at night I think might not be effective and more disorienting. They were already disoriented in daytime. Nighttime worse i think.

I actually like The Pacific the part where the MG was shooting whole night and the gunner got himself a medal of honour.

in the morning a pile of soldiers there

Is 1943-1944

If enemy cant see them
They also cant see enemy

And they came from british channel which known for their erratic weather

They need to land when weather is good for few days
