on the first day of me burning the incense, I was worried they won't come.
i was also worried if I chanted wrongly, or if English prayers will work.

Peta means Hungry Ghost. Petavatthu means Stories of Hungry Ghosts. https://tipitaka.fandom.com/wiki/Petavatthu Based on the story below, you don't have to worry whether they can receive your offerings. Whether they can receive or not is due to their karma. As long as you offer with sincerity, you will get the merits from the dana giving. They can get instant relief from Hungry Ghost realm by:
a. Repent
b. Desire to gain merits by offering to Buddha and the Sangha
c. Since they can't make the offerings, somebody makes the offerings, and dedicate the merits to them.

2.7 Dhanapala, The Rich Merchant

While the Teacher was staying at Jetavana, he told this story.

Before the Buddha was born, there was in the kingdom of Dasanna in the city of Erakaccha, a rich merchant Dhanapalaka, who was unbelieving, irreligious, mean and heretical. His works can be understood from the following text. At his death he was reborn as a peta(ghost) in a desert wilderness. Tormented by hunger and thirst, he wandered here and there.

So in the time when Buddha was born in the world and had started illuminating the Dhamma(path), some merchants who lived at Savatthi filled five hundred wagons with goods, and having gone to Uttarapatha(north India), sold their merchadise. There then they loaded on their carts goods for the return journey. They set out on the homeward road and at evening arrived at the foot of a certain tree. Then they unharnessed their oxen and made their abode for tile night: Then that peta, who was tormented by thirst, came to that place to get something to drink, and not obtaining even a drop, he uttered a cry.

When the merchants saw him, they asked him:
1. "Naked and of hideous appearance are you, thin and
with your veins visible. Your ribs stand out, and you are
emaciated. Now who are you, sir ?"

The peta:
2. "I, venerable sirs, am a peta, an unfortunate denizen of
Yarna's world. Since I had done evil I went from this world
to the region of the petas."

The merchants :
3• "Now what evil was done with your body, speech, or
mind ? Because of what act have you gone from here to
the world of the petas?"

The peta:
4• " There is a city of the Dasannas, famous, known by
the name of Erakaccha. There I formerly was a rich merchant;
by the name of Dhanapala they knew me."
5. "Eighty cartloads of gold belonged to me; I had
abundant gold and many pearls and cat's-eye gems."
6. " To such an extent was I the owner of great wealth,
but I did not like to give. When I took my meals, I locked
my door so that the beggars should not see me."
7, " Unbelieving and miserly was I, avaricious and abusive;
I used to restrain many of those who were charitable and
were active, "
8. "Saying: ' There is no reward for giving. Where is the
fruit of self restraint ?"
"The lotus-ponds, the wells, and the planted pleasure
gardens, the wayside watering places, and the passages at
the place hard to cross, I have destroyed."
9. "So I , not virtuous in my deeds, left the world as an
evildoer. I was reborn in the peta-region and am afflicted
with hunger and thirst. It is fifty-five years since I died."
10. " I do not recognize either food or drinking water.
As the withholding so is the loss, so the withholding.
For the petas , they say, know it : 'As the withholding
so is the loss'
11. "I, in the past, withheld; I did not give away many
treasures. Although deeds of charity are a duty, I did not
provide a refuge for myself."
12. " Now I feel bitter remorse, and I am burdened with the
fruit of my own deeds. After four months will come my death."
13. Down to the exceedingly severe and terrible hell I
shall fall ; it is four-cornered and has four doors; it is divided
into parts by measure; it is surrounded by an iron fence and
is covered on the top with iron."
14. "Its iron floor is glowing with heat. Flashing in all
sides for a hundred yojanas(x8km). it stands for all time."
15. "There for a long time I shall experience grievous
pain and the fruit of my evil deeds. Therefore, I bewail
this reality."
16. "For this reason I tell you something excellent, all of
you who a assembled here; do not commit a sinful act
either openly or in secret."
17. "If this evil deed you do or will perform, grief will
not leave you, even though ,you fly up in the air to escape it."
18. "Be respectful to mother and father; in the family
honor the elders ; give reverence to monks and brahmans(illuminated). Thus
you will come to heaven,"
19. "Not in the sky nor in the middle of the ocean, not
even though one enter the caves of the mountains, is found
that region of the earth where one could stand and free himself
from his evil deeds."

The merchants felt sorry for him and sprinkled water in his mouth. But, on account of the wicked deeds of that peta(ghost), he could not swallow. They asked him; "Now can't you get just a little relief ? "

He replied ; " Yes, when this evil deed is destroyed. If a donation be given either to Tathagata(Buddha) or to the disciples of Tathagata(Buddha) and the virtue of the donation be transferred to me, then I shall be released from this peta existence."

When the merchants had heard him, they went to Savatthi and told the Buddha, gave for seven days a great donation to the Sangha of the monks there, at whose head was the Buddha, and ascribed the gift to the peta.

Buddha then gave those merchants a dhamma discourse and the wise advice of staying away from the evil of greed & miserliness and instead follow the path of donation and of good deeds.

I like it when the Pali Canon is quoted.

May I ask if smoke offering is anywhere within the Pali canon?
From what I know Smoke Offering comes purely from Tibetian practices. Am not sure if it is something the Buddha himself taught.

Not sure about Pali Canon, but the sutra did mention about smoke offering.

This sutra is the sutra that introduces 准提 mantra. The sutra specifically mentions in the event of "水旱不调,疫毒流行" drought and pestilence, smoke/fire offering must be done for 7 days.

NAMO AMITUOFO

The reality of life is that it is a process. Being obsessed with the process brings suffering. Letting go of the process means understanding the suffering, emptiness, and the impermanent nature of life. Only by departing from the process can real life begin.

No one wants to suffer, yet out of ignorance living beings create suffering by performing non-virtuous actions. We should therefore feel equal compassion for all living beings without exception; there is no single living being who is not a suitable object of our compassion.

IMPERMANENCE AND SADNESS

Practicing mindfulness of impermanence is a good temporary measure. We practice it everyday -- noting the impermanence of ourselves and everything else around us, including our friends and relatives, your loving, friendly do and friendly cat. All are impermanent.
When you keep practicing, practicing, practicing your mind will become very strong. Sometimes even then you still have some sorrow when a loving pet or person dies. I know this from my personnel experience when my brother die, my father died, my mother died. I felt very sad and even cried in spite of all my know of Dhamma, all my practice of meditation. That hasn't happened recently. If it happened now I could control my emotions. But in those days, I couldn't - I cried.
So this happens to everybody. As we grow and mature and understand impermanence better, then our sorrow and grief slowly fade away.

Thig 9 Vaḍḍha’s Mother — A monk, roused by his mother, attains the highest peace.

Vaḍḍha’s Mother:

Vaḍḍha, don’t have any

underbrush-lust

ever, in the world, at all.

Don’t, my little son,

have a share in suffering

again & again.

For happy are sages, Vaḍḍha,

unperturbed, with doubt cut through.

Having become cool and self-controlled,

they dwell effluent-free.

Foster the path,

pursued by seers,

for the attainment of vision,

for the ending of stress.

Vaḍḍha:

Undaunted, mother,

you speak this matter to me.

I suspect that now in you

no underbrush

is found.

Vaḍḍha’s Mother:

Whatever fabrications

are lowly, middling, or exalted:

No underbrush for them in me

—not a bit, not the least little bit—

is found.

All effluents are ended for me—

heedful, doing jhāna.

The three knowledges

are attained;

the Buddha’s bidding,

done.

Vaḍḍha:

With what a vast goad

my mother poked me—

because of her sympathy—

verses connected to the ultimate goal.

Having heard her words—

my mother’s instruction—

Dhamma-saṁvega arose

for attaining rest from the yoke.

Resolute in exertion,

relentlessly, both day & night,

I, roused by my mother,

touched

the highest peace.

A calm mind will filter out the defilements in the heart.
A mind of discipline and concentration will filter out a myriad of karmic obstacles.

We Buddhists come to hear Dhamma teachings and study to learn these truths. If we know them, then our minds will enter the Dhamma; the Dhamma will enter our minds. Whenever a person’s mind enters the Dhamma, that person has well-being, that person has a mind at peace. The mind then has a way to resolve difficulties, but has no way to degenerate. When pain and illness afflict the body, the mind has many ways to resolve the suffering. It can resolve it naturally, understanding this as natural and not falling into depression or fear over it. Gaining something, we don’t get lost in delight. Losing it, we don’t get excessively upset, but rather we understand that the nature of all things is that having appeared, they then decline and disappear. With such an attitude we can make our way in the world. We are lokavidū, knowing the world clearly. Then samudaya, the cause of suffering, is not created, and taṇhā is not born. There is vijjā, knowledge of things as they really are, and it illumines the world. It illumines praise and blame. It illumines gain and loss. It illumines rank and disrepute. It clearly illumines birth, ageing, illness, and death in the mind of the practitioner.
(Ajahn Chah)

For me, 施食 is a 度众生的手段. You invite them here for a feast and then you teach them buddhism, for if you're empty handed, they may not come because learning buddhism may not be their prime concern (yes, meaning need to do the recital of the sutra paras to them or teach them to recite 阿弥陀佛, not just do the food offerings). Other ways could be just dedicating merit to them or 法界 as a whole. My perspective on this...

This statement was said by Shifu. 施食 is not just food offerings. It's also a way to let the unseen beings to have affinity with the Dharma. I will usually dedicate the merits of my daily homework to the 烟供香。Without doing so, it's also 施食 and let sentient beings to 结法缘.

For anyone who is interested with merit multiplier

https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/singapore/singapore

Tommorow eclipse.

https://fpmt.org/media/resources/dharma-dates/dates-explained/

ECLIPSE

Karmic results are multiplied by one hundred million on solar eclipses and seven hundred thousand on lunar.

from the result, it seems the eclipse will be at
30 Nov 2020, 18:58
for Singapore

So means want to accumulate merits best to do around this time ah??

Dear Everyone.

I had the great fortune of interacting with One of the Abbot and prominent figure in Singapore.

He gave me his number and told me I can direct all my Buddhist related question at him and he will try his best to answer.

Feeling extremely paiseh, I have yet to ask him any questions.

So I was thinking, why not open his help to the floor, and overtime I will choose one or two questions people have over here, and ask him for this HWZ community.

What do you guys think and what question would you ask the Head of the Buddhist Association of Singapore if you are given the chance to?

So it's 15:32HRS to 18:58HRS???

hmmm I wonder if I should:

(1) Copy Mantra/Sutra
(2) Chant 108
(3) Do Sur Offering

Do all three very tiring :s22:
