Well, managed to get early termination fees waived off by M1, signed up for SH 1Gbps, free 3 months subscription. So no more M1 from 15th Jan onwards.

Hi may I ask how did you ask for the waiver? My contract ends in March

Early Termination fee quote by CS was $48.83. Minuses off Two outages this month, where they waived off a month bill worth $29.9, left $19.93. Ask CS to waive, CS mentioned cannot as not M1 policy. Then ask for manager call back to confirm, the CS asked manager on the waiver, got confirmation from manager that he gave one time waiver. That was then I took the offer and asked them to terminate on 15th January 2021. At the same time, sign up for SH 1Gbps, got 3 months subscription free, and free router.

Sign up now and can arrange to only port over on 15th Jan 21? Sounds good cos I usually go to the Telco shop the next day after my contract expires.

What was the free router that you got from Starhub?

What was the free router that you got from Starhub?

Starhub now gives lousy free Nokia Beacon 1 (AC1200) for 1Gbps plan, resale value is around S$40 in Carousell. Previously they gave Linksys EA8100 which is closer to the M1 RT-AC2600 (same CPU, same AC2600 rating, but Asus has more FW features and more FW updates).

Good thing about Nokia Beacon 1 is that you can buy the second unit from Carousell to form a mesh.

But you should not really just look at the free router to decide which way to go. You can always use your own router and it is usually better to use your own router.

Good thing about Starhub is that it is giving the best offer for new sign-up and recontract customers of 1Gbps this year.

Customer services of Starhub is pretty bad but so far I do not need to contact them often for my Starhub 500Mbps plan, probably twice in the past 6.5 years and the enquiries were not related to broadband service.

Check with those who got their black ONT (aka HG8240) replaced with the white ONT (aka HG8240HS), did M1 took back the former?

If your request for change of ONT or they seem that you need to change the ONT, they will send a technician come for an excellent. Once exchange, they will bring back the old one and leave the new one with their subscriber

Thanks for the clarification.

They offered to replace the black ONT as it is very old (coming to 10yrs). Seem like the "technician" is not from M1 as he is in casual wear and sneaker! :s22:

Curious, exchange for what reason? Who initiated the exchange?

Until recently, I wasn't able to get IPv6 working for many many years.
Tried ASUS and LinkSys routers both didn't work. Shifted house and migrated the line over with the same black ONT - still didn't work.

Anyway, M1 support knows nuts about IPv6 - each CSO will say different things. One will say IPv6 not supported, another will say it should just work, i.e. it's not their problem, it's your equipment problem.

Long story short, switched to using Google Nest Wifi Router in my new home - and M1 support actually redirected my call to Google Support.

Google collected the router logs and analyzed and confirmed that it is M1 problem. Sent M1 email to say that Google support says it is M1 problem and miraculously IPv6 worked automatically soon after - till now I've no idea what M1 did at their backend.

As mentioned earlier, they offer to replace the equipment during one of the service call. Seem very eager on their part, can even do it on holiday or weekend!

To be fair, ISP can't provide support to every consumer equipment, one has to refer back to manufacturer for technical support.

As for IPv6, I have no issue getting address ever since I switched to openwrt firmware on my old TP-Link router. The stock firmware don't even support IPv6!

Thanks, when was this?

Reason for asking is that while trying to figure out why the various routers and directly connected Win 10 laptop couldn't get an IPv6 address from M1, I asked if it might be due to the black ONT that was outdated and need to be replaced - which they replied as negative.
This was in Sep 2020.

Anyway, turns out it wasn't the case as my router is able to obtain IPv6 address now using the old black ONT.

Nah, was able to get IPv6 for couple of years liao on the black ONT. Even direct ONT connection from PC can also get it. It's your router firmware issue.

Omg AC1200 is so backward. You are right, I'd rather go with my own router and buy another Asus router to form AiMesh. It's either I get another AC86U or go with the newer AX86U. Won't be going with other models as they have a bigger footprint.

Well the annoying thing was that it wasn't due to router firmware - coz tried 3 different routers from Asus, LinkSys and Google - all don't work.

Also, did direct Windows 10 connection to ONT troubleshooting (no router) with M1 - didn't work.

Eventually, did troubleshooting with Google support and they confirm it was M1 problem after analyzing the router logs. Thereafter, the problem disappeared after updating M1 support on Google's findings.

FWIW i had some issues getting a DHCPv6 response from M1 with a Pfsense firewall... Turns out they are picky about the DUID sent by the client:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DHCPv6

DHCPv6 uses a "unique identifier" called "DUID" to identify the client device.

As per the DHCPv6 spec, there are 4 types of DUID supported, Pfsense defaults to "DUID-LLT" which uses your mac address plus a timestamp to form your DUID. With this setting, M1 never responded to the DHCPv6 requests.
When i changed it to DUID-LL (ie just use the mac address to form your DUID) it all worked.

So it would depend on the DHCPv6 client in your router. Some routers may default to different values, or may not give you the option to change the settings.
