Not expert but think impression is all along left is higher rank than right. Like the age old 左青龙右白虎, 青龙 traditional come first. Perhaps cause eastern traditional alot of things like to associate with right first, thus give many the impression right it higher rank.

Yang Xiao is also definitely a competent person.

I think we saw Fan Yao being "dangerous" because he went on "attack mode". He infiltrated the Yuan government and afterwards re-initated contact with Ming jiao.

On the other hand, Yang Xiao was always on "defense mode". After Yang Ding Tian's death and the departure of Fan Yao . the 4 guardian lords and the 5 wanderers, Yang Xiao had to look after the entire Guang Ming Peak by himself...the talent pool at Ming Jiao was literally stripped bare.

Dai Qi Si took on the battle with Han Qian Ye under the context of fighting for her father/recognizing YDT as not just the sect leader but also her father in a way.

I think many people took a fancy to Dai Qi Si, potentially even Xie Xun himself, but no one really dared to say anything.

His attitude and pride mellowed a lot since he met Wuji. In the past he has no eyes for anyone below Fan Yao and the 4 guardians. He proved himself to be a capable administrator to others while serving under Wuji (and strangely not under yang ding tian) and that his kungfu is only second to Zhang Wuji at his fight at Guang Ming Ding against the 5 wanderers and Bat King, and again against the 3 diving monks.

Personally, I think his martial arts is better then fan yao's, but fan yao is someone I'll stay away from even if I were in Ming Sect for I dont know any day I might be killed by him as part of some mission of his.

I don't think he has a reason to be bitter or angsty. He was right, YDT was sabotaged and got an suan. There was indeed a ploy against the Ming cult.

No one at Ming cult betrayed Fan Yao; on the other hand, he did break several laws of Ming cult as you mentioned. The laws of Ming cult was that any in-fighting means the death penalty and Fan Yao killed 3 leaders within the Ming cult. That was definite death, I don't think he can afford to be bitter or cocky.

Think CN history alot of things change with different rulers. Take the traditional start of the year. By right the more accurate and practical one should follow the season where spring start means the beginning of the year. But later on not sure if influenced by the west or not, some start to adopt the Gregorian one start in mid winter. Think there was one that even pushed it even earlier. And then they keep ding dong abit before later settled on the Gregorian one.

Think its not just Fan Yao. At that time many of them are smitten by her want to have a relationship with her. But she married an outsider broke many hearts.

Over time, YDT did realize that although YX was very competent in terms of martial arts, he was not exactly someone easy to get along. YDT realized that if he made YX the next sect leader, not everyone might submit to YX's manner of doing things.

Why would you think so? If YX was not capable, YDT would not had taught him QKDNY. I think when YDT was at helm, because of the immense talent pool available, everyone chipped in a little and all was good. The 5 wanderers are also very skilled-I think it was mentioned that Peng Yingyu took on 6 Emei disciples (who were one generation below Miejue) at a go and fought to a draw (details hazy).

YDT should have known that the others dont like yang xiao when he's still alive. So while he feels that YX has the talents to be the next leader, YX's probable lack of support from the others might be the cause of YDT's death for Xie Xun to be the deputy leader instead of YX.
