I don’t understand outsized and misguided nationalism that doesn’t differentiate between a country’s foreign policies and its people. Even if one is unhappy with the Chinese regime and its policies towards us, why extend that dislike towards the country and its people? I have no issue with Malaysians or Indonesians even if some of their politicians act like bullying aholes. Or Americans or Europeans even if their politicians are flaming geopolitical fires around the world. I don’t want to live in North Korea and they’ve a mad man in charge of their nuclear arsenal. But I don’t have any issue with the country or its people. Yet so many here will find any opportunity to put down China and Chinese.
A lot of their people are obnoxious.
Not just in forums or Chinese social media, and I have encountered countless in Singapore and China.
They talked about annexing Singapore, call us 坡县 i.e. Pore County, called us America's lap-dogs when we don't support them and said we don't 饮水思源 when they are the ones blatantly ungrateful.
How should we be nice to them?
As for disliking at a country-level, are we supposed to think that their Foreign Affairs, their Navy, their Customs, their Health Administration, their Agents, their Police etc acted on their own and we should dislike each and every separately?
Anyway these are my personal thoughts. Before these 10 years, I was ok with China. My past 2 girlfriends are from China and I had lived there.
