was checking hotels for a trip next dec on booking.com but realised a lot of hotels seemed to be not listed. is it because they are not ready to accept guest yet after their re-opening?

For Booking sites, not all hotels accept reservations so far in advance. You can check back at a later date. 1-2 months in advance would be sufficient

Will be going to Taipei for the first time, any hotel/airbnb recommendation? Which area to stay? Have been reading old posts and hearing people recommending Via hotel. Is it "Via Hotel Taipei Station"?

Via Hotel Ximen has ceased operation in 2021...

not very sure about their other branch...

Best to message them on Line or Wechat to double confirm they are still in operation... cos their website is also very outdated... Most of their Facebook pages stop updating in 2021...

Many years ago yes. Cannot comment now since not sure about their maintenance all after reopen. Might be better if you check on recent reviews

Used to stay at midtown whenever I visit Taiwan. But recently I see their reviews like quite jialat in-terms of their room and service. Decided to pay more and try westgate for my upcoming trip this time round.

Seems that midtown is getting crowded as recently many influencers promoted them. I read about the leaking bathroom and busy elevators.

Yeah and lots of reviews about the large amount of tour groups as well. Maybe they cant manage well with the current volume of visitors. But if you willing to take chances it's actually OK for the price imo based on my past experience.

yup, back from midtown two weeks back, rather rundown especially the toilets, leaking from the bathtub for a double double queen bed room. Once bathe out, the second person to use will need to be very careful as the floor is slippery. The lift is still the same, slow, and the door closes fast.

They have automated self service check in's, but if its more than 3 rooms, this option doesn't apply.

stayed at midtown in Jan this year, not that bad for us. booked for the deluxe double and never encounter leaking toilets and speed of lifts is acceptable.

wanting to book again for aug trip but the price is rather high now. even more so for Westgate.

Didn't know hotel in Taichung can be so cheap - around $70/night for 4 pax, 3 stars, 5 mins walk to Taichung train station. That's not even 1/3 of the price I pay for the Cingjing minsu!

(BTW it's weekday rate, price doubles for weekends.)

I notice many here mentioned Midtown (Richardson?). I'm unfamiliar with Taiwan/Taipei, so any reason why this hotel is a favorite?

Anyway I tried to look for hotels near 'Taipei main station', but only managed to find one that can meet requirement (for 4 pax, $200-$300 range, spacious enough, for at least 4 days' stay). Hotel name is Cosmos. Anyone had stayed in this hotel before? Any comments?

BTW there actually are few other hotels that meet our criteria but too bad, they've run out of rooms liao. :frown:

Few years back I stay in Orange Hotel - Ximen Taipei
Location to ximenting is around 3 mins walk toward the mrt exit1.

If you want cheaper, can check out Airbnb, usually have bigger room at lower price.

my personal reason why we like to stay XMD area is that the food choice is still aplenty even till late night, including Cinema, Watson.

i stayed at Taipei main station before but come to night time, area not much choice liao.

Midtown is popular due to its proximity to XMD area and it it consider quite a good and big hotel with big space for taxi or airport transfer. i myself feel not that bad and had no problem with overall.
