This is using Maslow's hierarchy of needs to depict the needs of a human being throughout his development.

At the lowest level are the fundamental needs of a human being like food, water and shelter.
When one reaches certain level where they don't have to worry about food and shelter and importantly income and money, they need something more to fulfil their esteem.
Such people at middle age may suffer from some stagnation in what they do, and as such they seek thrills and things to spruce up their life. Don't forget that Love has many kind... after getting married and having children, the love becomes companion love rather than the kind experience when they are in their 20s.

personally i think that if one climbs the hierachy too quickly, there may be a sense of emptiness, which is why many succumb to depression or go into drugs to try something different.

Any EDMWers clinical psychologist can comment ?
