It's clearly a CCP faction infighting. Jack Ma is not a foreigner and he is aligned Shanghai faction. BABA is given a monopoly and it can be taken away. At a country level, CCP thrashing a key customer is not a good idea.
No lah, more like tekanning foreign investors (esp US ones) to send a msg to US how they can mess with their pple also loh.

Like cutting the nose to spite the face? Lol. I agree I think CCP Wanna flush out all or most foreigners from China stocks before making it chiong so can benefit mostly own citizens or government only.

By the numbers, let's look at the holder numbers for both HK and NYSE.
https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/BABA/holders
About 15% is held by institutional holder. Temasek is the top ten holder.

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/9988.HK/holders
About 30% is held by institutional holder.

Institutional need to hold BABA as part of the basket of stocks.
If you compare to AMZN, institutional holder is about 60%.

How is China going to differentiate foreigner? By stock exchange or account holders?
Jack was trying to emulate Bezos until his ouster. Breakup? Picking up the pieces is a lot harder.

My recommendation is to do the opposite of the MM experts.

Based on my experience,
They're shitting on META? Bought META.
They're shitting on PLTR? Bought PLTR.
They're shitting on BABA? Bought more BABA.

I dun think they were “given” a monopoly, they were just the first to go into the e-commerce space, but this first mover advantage is now mostly gone, e-commerce is just a low margin business now, even Amazon struggles to make money from e-commerce, their main cash cow is really AWS, it has been this way for years now.

Back in the glory days Alibaba had their fingers in several high growth sectors like fintech and cloud, but this is not the case anymore, ANT has pretty much been confiscated, cloud growth has been very slow due to geopolitics. This is just a melting ice cube unless they can find new avenues of growth.

Not monopoly? GOOG, AMZN, META have any business in China? Jiang's faction gained much from BABA but not Xi's. You disputed it was monopoly not given to BABA but ANT can be confiscated?

There’s always domestic competition. Like Amazon, Alibaba had first mover advantage but that advantage is no longer a big deal, it’s the same thing for Amazon (e-commerce arm).

There can be no monopolies in China other than the CCP, dun see why they’d offer any company any monopoly in the first place unless it’s a CCP controlled SOE. This is the fear many entrepreneurs have now, grow too big and the CCP will turn it into an SOE with golden shares.

This is the reason why some Fund Managers argue that Tiong companies can’t trade at very high multiples.

There’s always domestic competition.

China has always practised crony capitalism. Guanxi has always been the key determinant for success or failure of business in China. As an example, China continues to throw billions into the EV space to build cars no one wants. This strange industrial policy is due to the unique role Xi's British son-in-law plays in the EV industry.

When the China stock market is down, the ones suffering are the elites. Not the normies.

Thus they all want to sell everything and run road but that’s ongoing process. Most disturbing is the collapse of FDI last year, not great for medium term outlook at all.

Once left, not easy and so fast comes back. Means recovery could be tough.

Most people in China do not own stocks, what they do own are homes (~90% households own their homes) so the housing market meltdown hurts the average citizen far more than the stock market meltdown.
