are the x870 boards going to have any kind of improvements in gaming? Or are they all gonna be the same thing but different

X870 = X670 + USB4 + WiFi 7

If you don't need either of the last two, then X670 or even B650 will suffice.

If you are buying a motherboard now for the latest generation CPU, I guess USB 4 and WiFi 7 are both must have features.

A few months ago I chose to go with Intel Core Ultra 5 125H based laptop and not AMD Ryzen 7000/8000 series based laptop, because of USB4/TB4/TB3 (for 10G NIC) and WiFi 7.

But of course it is not too bad to add a WiFi 7 PCI-E adapter. Not so sure about USB 4/TB4 if your motherboard does not support.

USB 4.0 is not a must have feature. Wifi 7 is more beneficial over USB 4.0.

Depends on what you want to do. For example, USB 4 external SSD is useful.

USB 4 to 10G NIC can be useful as well now that 10Gbps internet is available in reasonable price. This is especially useful if your motherboard has only one x16 PCI-E slot (occupied by graphics card) and then two x1 PCI-E slot. Then you have no place to put a 10G PCI-E x4 network adapgter.

That's why it's not a must have feature.

In that case, you can argue that WiFi 7 is not a must as well since there are quite some PCI-E WiFi 7 adapters already in the market (not Intel BE200 based since BE200 only works with Intel paltform). There will be upcoming WiFi 7 USB adapters from Asus / TP-Link as well. In fact, COMFAST is already shipping USB WiFi 7 adapter (https://github.com/morrownr/USB-WiFi/issues/494) but it may not be the best as the chipset used does not work under Linux.

Then you can just stick with older generation motherboard...

Reference (not available in Singapore yet)
1) Asus ROG USB-BE92.

2) TP-Link Archer TBE400UH (to be launched)

Yap, wifi 7 is more beneficial to a user than having USB 4.

Yep, x870e is actually worse than x670e if you need 2 full speed gen5 ssd.

The USB4 controller in X800 use up one gen5 connection off the cpu.

x670e, you can connect 1gen5x16 gpu + 2gen5x4 ssd, full speed

x870e, if you connect 2gen5x4 ssd, your gpu connection drops to gen5x8.

The X670E and X870E actually uses the same chipset (from Asmedia) so the number of PCIe lanes is the same. Take some away for USB4 and there is less left.

nope talking about the pcie lanes provided by am5 cpu. total is 28 gen5 lanes usable

with x670e mobo vendors wired the lanes usually 16 to gpu, 4 + 4 to gen5 nvme, 4 to the asmedia PROM21 chipset

with x870e mobo now wired to 16 gpu, 4 to gen5 nvme, 4 to asmedia ASM4242 usb4 chipset, 4 to the asemedia PROM21 chipset

but both asm4242 and prom21 are wired as gen4. :o

mobo will want offer 3 or more nvme slots selling points but the dedicated pcie lanes are limited

USB4 will be more important.

All desktop users can connect cable if need low latency and faster internet, but if the USB is not 4, you cant do anything about it.

Whether it is the total number of PCIe lanes or just the PCIe lanes provided by the CPU, the result is still the same.
