This is one of those technicalities that doesn't favour us consumers. If you include the PON frames, the line rate indeed is 10Gbps, but once you strip those out you're left with around 8.2Gbps on a good day.
to a consumer i pay 10gbps but get 8.2 to 8.5 only. missing 1.5gbps which is even more than the base 1gbps plan lor. anyway, may hear more complaints when more people sign up.

I signed up for the SIMBA BB 2.5G plan in March 2024, opting for what I thought was a 3-month plan. However, when I requested to terminate my service today, support informed me that my plan is actually a 1-year contract, and the 3-month term only refers to the payment cycle. Can someone here confirm if this is correct? Also, I never received a contract during the signup process, unlike what other service providers typically do.

In the tnc and website it was quite clear the minimum contract was 1 year.

I’m not suggesting that they changed their contract terms on the website, but is it possible they did so without us knowing? They should be sending out contract terms, as other service providers typically do.

As mentioned, you can not say the limit of 10Gbps XGS-PON based plans as 10Gbps. Rather you have to use 8.5Gbps as the max.

Then the ratio for 10Gbps will be higher at 0.894 to 0.968.

1Gbps plan: 0.97 to 0.975 [I actually have doubts for Starhub's claim of this number, Singtel's number makes more sense to me]
5Gbps plan: 0.823 to. 0.957
10Gbps plan: 0.894 to 0.968.

I understand that ISPs do not mention this limitation of XGS-PON technology, but you can refer to the max speed published by ST/SH/MR for 10Gbps plan.

BTW, the following is just a quick summary. Please click the link for more details of the test condition.

One other thing to note from Simba - https://support.simba.sg/hc/en-us/a...ocal-Download-Speed-of-SIMBA-10Gbps-Broadband

"Note however that based on NLT’s standard topology for the provision of standard Residential GPON services, there is a 24:1 split ratio for each port. This means that a single 10Gbps port on SIMBA’s equipment is shared by up to 24 users. SIMBA deploys a “fair-queue” scheme that ensures no single user can monopolize the available bandwidth; resources are shared equally among the actively connected users. Therefore, the theoretical lowest speed at any time could be as low as 10Gbps / 24 = approximately 400Mbps."

This probably also apply to other Telco using GPON services.

Very good point about the split ratio. But in reality that should not happen since it wil be very rare for even two users to carry out SpeedTest at the same time.

It is good that SIMBA has published the data.
https://support.simba.sg/hc/en-us/a...ocal-Download-Speed-of-SIMBA-10Gbps-Broadband

The Typical Maximum Local Download Speed of our 10Gbps Broadband plan is between 6.5Gbps to 8.1Gbps.

This typical local download speed range is the general speed you will likely experience using a direct wired LAN connection to the ONT. A CAT 6 cable (or better) and a computer capable of saturating a 10Gbps ethernet port is required to achieve the typical speed for a 10Gbps plan.

The typical local download speeds above were obtained from a sampling of users who have purchased the Eero Max 7 router from us. The Eero router provides statistics of bandwidth utilization and maximum speeds achieved based on real traffic towards speed test servers located locally.

I remember that there were early reports that SIMBA did not put up detailed terms and conditions up in the website during the initial launch of 2.5Gbps plan at S$21.80 per month. On the other hand, I did remember that I saw 360 days mentioned as well, not 3 month. The main missing info was the pricing after 360 days previously.

The early batch of SIMBA 2.5Gbps users were not so happy as they paid for the NLT charges and ONT charges, even if the monthly price was lower --> the total monthly cost is actually higher.

I could be wrong though.

this is normal, even back when u subscribe 512Kbps DSL, your so call web browser download is also subjected to all the overheads.. worst, consumers think they should see 512KB/s in the download, when most are not familiar with Kbps which is the networking term, while on the application layer when you download, you are presented with KB/s .. so that doesn't help as well...

Signed up for 10gbps SIMBA broadband about 2 weeks ago, so far it's been quite disappointing:
- 10gbps plan, but I'm only getting around 600mbps up/down in speedtest, it can drop to 200mbps at certain time, never been able to achieve anything higher than 700mbps, I am using AX router on MacBook with wifi 6 capability, so I'm not sure what's the issue
- Gaming on simba is really bad, it just seems like they are not able to connect to singapore server directly, and need to route through Hong Kong etc just to reach back to singapore server, so you get very high latency 100ms+ on alot of games like mobile legend etc, previously on M1 and this was never an issue.
- CGNAT, meaning you won't be able to connect back to your own network to use as VPN etc, not a deal breaker for me but useful to have when travelling to certain countries

Regret signing up, but with the 1 year minimum contract, I got no choice but to stick with it. If they don't fix this by the contract expiration, I will definitely be porting back out to one of the big 3 telco.
