NATIONAL Registration Identity Card (NRIC) numbers should not be treated as sensitive, and instead be viewed as full names currently are, a Ministry of Digital Development and Information spokesperson said on Saturday (Dec 14).

"As a unique identifier, the NRIC number is assumed to be known, just as our real names are known.

“There should therefore not be any sensitivity in having one’s full NRIC number made public, in the same way that we routinely share and reveal our full names to others,” the spokesperson said.

The response comes after public concern over the retrieval of NRIC numbers of citizens on the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority’s (Acra) Bizfile online portal. The portal is used for business registrations and filings.

Isn't it because of this, it will always return the correct personal information through the NRIC number during an inquiry?

Thus, a name is not typically considered as sensitive information. And for decades of nation building, citizens have been informed to exercise caution when giving out their NRIC number as it may result in illegal activities such as fraud or identity theft.

Until the government can assure us, by disclosing such a unique identifier like our NRIC number won't lead to an increase in fraudulent or criminal activities, I would be foolish to disclose my NRIC number.

MDDI is right saying that NRIC is not a reliable for authentication.

It is also not right to leak it to the public. First, many legacy systems still use it as authentication. Second, revealing the full NRIC in ACRA does not give any additional benefit.

Probably someone who has OCD worrying about NRIC.

If you think critically, NRIC and names are not enough to hack or steal your money.

When you register for a new SIM, ah bengs and ah lians have to photocopy your NRIC. They know your details.

The people in the HR also know your details. Insurance agents and lawyers also know your details when you consult them. lol
I luff at the part of "think critically". How ironic.

Last time fill supermarket contests or any contest/lucky draw was need full nric number. Before pdda the contest organiser can sell the personal information collected? Then so many data breaches with even photo of nric leaked.

I think there should be a list of nric number and matching name phone number for sale somewhere.

You can rest assured as our "systems" are much more superior than US. When US says that their IC is confidential, we are saying that it is not anymore. Our govt has the confident to say that meaning that they have done their "due" diligence already.
