| NEW: Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson defended his decision not to bring on Ashley Young’s 18-year-old son Tyler in his side’s 2-0 loss to Everton in the 2024/25 FA Cup third round on Thursday.
“Very, very difficult [to leave Tyler on the bench], but I’ve got to do what I think is best for the team. As much as I wanted Tyler to get on, if the game had been 2-0 at that point, I would’ve put him on. But it’s 1-0, I’ve got to get a forward on. I’ve got to try to get something out of the game. I’ve got to do what’s best for my team. And we’re not a charity case. You know as much as I wanted Tyler to get on with his dad, one of their [Everton] players had a bit of a pop at me which is bang out of order. You know, I’ve got to do what’s best for our team.”
Ashley Young’s reaction on X: “GUTTED……”
The Youngs were hoping to make history given no father and son have played against each other in 154 years of the FA Cup.
