Former Chief of Army David Neo visits Tampines North residents with MP Baey Yam Keng

It's a great day to be a volunteer at Tampines North?

image

Former Chief of Army David Neo, 47, was spotted doing house visits with Tampines GRC Member of Parliament Baey Yam Keng.

According to a Facebook post by Baey, Neo joined him on Apr. 4 evening and a few residents could recognise this "new volunteer".

Neo, a Major-General, passed the baton to Brigadier-General Cai Dexian, 40, on Mar. 21, 2025.

He was touted as a potential People's Action Party (PAP) candidate, along with two former Singapore armed forces (SAF) leaders Dinesh Vasu Dash and Goh Pei Ming.

In the past week, Neo also expressed his gratitude towards pioneers in the Singapore Army and also reflected on what he considered as his biggest achievement when he was the Chief of Army.

He concluded that it's all about the people and the things he did that touched them.

Here's what he said in two Instagram posts, beginning with 'it's a great day to be a soldier!':

"As I handed over the role of Chief of Army, I am deeply thankful and appreciative of the pioneers who went before us and built an Army that is more than capable of defending Singapore and Singaporeans. Our first Chief of the General Staff LG Winston Choo, Chief Defense Scientist Prof Lui Pao Chuen, Chief Commando Officer LTC Clarence Tan, and all my Commanders and seniors who did the hard stuff before us, so we can continue the work of Army STRONG. And for reminding us that it's always about taking care of our soldiers, so that we can take care of the mission."

"An often asked question in my last month of service is what do I consider my biggest achievements as Chief. It's not the big acquisitions or the big plans, but what really matters to me are the things we did that touched our people.

Because in the final analysis, it's always all about people. It's the only thing that we remember, it's the only thing that matters, and the only thing that we never regret spending time on. And it's our job to take care of our people, so that every day is a great day to be a soldier."

Neo is the first Commando officer to be appointed COA.

Neo graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Engineering degree with honours in electrical engineering and a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction in economics.

He subsequently completed a Master of Business Administration degree in business administration, management and operations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Master of Science degree in operations research at Stanford University.

I think Yandao Baey is stepping down this election as he served 4 terms and still only parliamentary secretary

Sengkang to get new dog park at Rivervale Shores, butterfly garden at Anchorvale in 2025: WP MPs

And an edible rooftop garden in Buangkok.

image

Sengkang residents can expect to see new and updated amenities and developments in their estate, with some to be completed in the next few months.

This was announced by Workers' Party (WP) Members of Parliament (MPs) for Sengkang group representation constituency (GRC) on Apr. 5 at the Sengkang Sculpture Park, a community space that will also be revitalised with Sengkang's heritage as a fishing village in mind.

Speaking to the public and media on Saturday morning, Jamus Lim, He Ting Ru and Louis Chua announced the five-year masterplan for the town in the northeast of Singapore, which includes the projects planned for, as well as the routine works that have been carried out as part of estate upkeeping.

Dog park

A highly-anticipated amenity that will be opening this year is the Rivervale Dog Run at Rivervale Shores, a recently completed housing project at the edge of Sengkang

Construction of the dog park is currently underway and will be completed in the first half of 2025, He said, providing a timeline for the project.

The idea for the dog park was first mooted by a group of dog owners, who submitted a proposal to Chua.

Sengkang Town Council then conducted a comprehensive one-month survey between October and November 2024.

Out of 271 responses, 72 per cent of residents expressed support, including a significant proportion of non-dog owners.

To address potential noise concerns of non-dog owners and residents living in the vicinity, the dog run is slated to operate within designated hours with regular works carried out to maintain the facility.

Butterfly sanctuary and hydroponic garden

The rooftop of a multi-purpose hall in the Anchorvale precinct will be transformed into a butterfly sanctuary and hydroponic garden, with construction works to start next week, He said.

It will house flowering plants and nectar sources, and serve as a education resource for families and schools as it allow visitors to get up close to the winged creatures.

The hydroponic garden will allow residents to cultivate their own edible greens and herbs to promote urban agriculture.

Edible rooftop garden

A new edible rooftop garden in Buangkok has also been planned for and will allow the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, and herbs by residents.

This is following the success of two existing community gardens in Sengkang, one of which is multi-storey rooftop garden at Block 156A Rivervale Crescent.

Masterplan five years in the making

Speaking about the long-term nature of the masterplan, He said: "Work on the masterplan started five years ago when we took over Sengkang town. We see this as a process that cannot be done just towards the end."

"It is an ongoing thing that started from the beginning when we came in and very quickly take over," she added.

It has been a work-in-progress for the team since then.

Lim highlighted improvement projects that have been completed, such as "new playgrounds and covered walkways".

He added: "About 50 per cent of the estate has undergone R&R (repairs and redecoration works) and the remainder will be done in the next several years."

"We have taken residents' input very, very seriously. Some of these involve additional residents or elderly corners, for instance," Lim said.

Community involvement

However, the town council and the MPs in charge will not be the only ones spearheading plans.

Sengkang residents aged 18 to 30 will be invited to apply to join a steering committee to shape the design of the Sengkang Sculpture Park, which houses the iconic whale sculpture as its main feature for the past two decades.

sengkang-sculpture-park.jpg

The initiative is for individuals passionate about community planning and design to step up to shape and transform the living environment they live in.

Previously, the Sengkang residents had also chipped in by submitting logo designs for Sengkang Town Council, as well as engaged in mural paintings in the estate while assisted by professionals.

Beyond residents' involvement, Chua also highlighted the provision of electronic waste recycling bins initiative in Sengkang, which is carried out with the support of e-waste processors.

Shortage of halal food options addressed

The WP MPs were also asked about their efforts to address residents feedback, in particular, regarding the estate's apparent shortage of halal food options.

Acknowledging that he has been provided ample feedback regarding this issue, Lim said his team has conducted surveys of each and every coffee shop in Sengkang to find out about the availability of halal food.

"When we discovered that there were occasions where a halal food stall was closed prematurely before the end of their particular contractual term, we then raised it up and asked what kind of safeguard mechanisms are there for us to potentially ensure that halal food options continue to be available," Lim said.

The team then looked into the measures to be taken to ensure halal food options remain.

He added: "We always start with working with the relevant agencies as much as we are able to, before then using also our forum in parliament as a venue which we can raise pertinent issues that matter not just to residents of Sengkang, but to the rest of Singapore."

When pressed about whether the trio will return to stand in Sengkang GRC for the general election due by November 2025, the MPs demurred and said more plans will be revealed in time to come.

He said: "Akan datang (Coming soon). This is a town council event, we really want to focus on Sengkang town and the plans that the town council have. As and when the election campaign kicks off later this year, you will hear from us and hear from the party as well."

Party whip. Like that one.

otherwise either u comply with PAP or u can go oppo.
PAP most vocal now is Louis Ng, at least he got speak out a bit on the bread and butter issues like Days of Annual Leaves and HDB Smoking, etc. but honestly he should be speaking out against his party more on the hot-button issues too.

Other than him, cannot think of much liao.

Last time, got 1 Lee Bee Wah talk alot but mostly is focus on the ikan bilis stuff that no one really cares about. Find this kind quite annoying actually.

Only Opposition really speak out alot on the bread-and-butter issues like GST/COE/ERP, Manpower policies and HDB-related issues, etc.

That is why they don't like people like LMW, because he is relentless on these kind of issues which don't reflect well on them.

Thus, personally sometimes don't understand why ome people keep harping CSM as an example to reflect badly on opposition.

Yes, overall did not perform as well as expected but most PAP MPs are not any better than him. Mainly just keep quieting or praise the government/parrot their narratives only.

Energy within PSP matches my passion: new face Sani Ismail on right moment to join politics

Several new faces were present at the walkabout.

"I have been looking at Singapore's political landscape, waiting for the right moment to participate in it, because I have a lot of passion, and I found that the energy within PSP (Progress Singapore Party) matches with what I have and what I hope to achieve," said one of the political party's new faces, Sani Ismail.

Speaking to the media during a walkabout at Boon Lay Place Food Village on Apr. 5, Sani expressed his hope to reach a level where Singaporeans can "understand and appreciate" differing viewpoints in the interest of improving policies.

"I think Singaporeans, we are ready for it," he said.

Sani joined PSP seven to nine months ago and has been actively participating in various walkabouts and door-to-door visits with the team.

Meeting residents at walkabouts

According to his Facebook, Sani has previously participated in walkabouts at Choa Chu Kang and at the Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre.

When asked by the media if the locations of his walkabouts indicate where he plans to contest, Sani neither confirmed nor denied it, explaining that the party is active in different areas and that he "merely goes out and helps the local teams."

"And as it so happens, I'm here today," he said.

On his strategy for reaching out to residents, Sani mentioned that he has been "very physical" in various areas to meet residents.

"Residents were very welcoming to see us," he said.

He also shared that many residents have raised concerns with him about issues such as the rising cost of living, the need for affordable housing, and the growing social inequality.

"I think residents I’ve met during my door-to-door visits would understand that I hope they can feel that I'm a very genuine person, very approachable, and that I have their interests at heart and a good listening ear," he later added.

Sani is currently working as the managing director and in-house legal counsel of management consultancy firm Deesolo International.

Other new faces

Another new face, Stephanie Tan, also greeted residents during the walkabout, engaging in conversations as she handed out flyers and tissue packets.

She was previously spotted at a walkabout with PSP founder and chairman Tan Cheng Bock at Clementi 448 Market and Food Centre.

A PSP newsletter revealed that the 36-year-old graduated from the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore and is currently a full-time housewife.

Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Hazel Poa was also present at the walkabout, along with Sumarleki Amjah, a former Workers' Party volunteer.

Both were seen conversing with residents who came up to them.

Sumarleki has been with the PSP since mid-2024 and was one of the new faces at PSP's first walkabout in Taman Jurong.

He is also the head of Packaged Food and Business Development at Del Monte and was featured in their volunteer series.

Another person present at the walkabout was Poa's husband Tony Tan Lay Thiam, who introduced himself as a member of the party.

Tan and Poa both contested in 2011 general election as National Solidarity Party candidates in Chua Chu Kang GRC.

They met when they were both students at the University of Cambridge.

Asked by CNA if the materialisation of the plans was contingent on the incumbent People’s Action Party (PAP) members being voted in at the next General Election, Mr Gan reiterated that the plan was developed by the incumbent Chua Chu Kang Town Council team.

"So it depends on who … is in charge of the town," said Mr Gan. "And if there’s a new team, the new team may have different ideas, they have different things that they want to do."

“They will bring new energy and experience in community bonding and building to the current team,” Fu added.

More than 200 upgrading projects in the next five years

In her speech at the event, Fu also highlighted that the transition to direct management has enabled the town council to be more responsive and effective at addressing Jurong-Clementi residents' concerns in the past five years.

The Jurong-Clementi Town Council currently oversees 84,685 residential and commercial units across seven divisions: Bukit Batok, Bukit Batok East, Clementi, Jurong Central, Jurong Spring, Taman Jurong, and Yuhua.

Over 80 per cent of residents expressed satisfaction in the latest Municipal Services Survey, Fu said.

The Repairs & Redecoration work has been expedited since the country moved on from Covid-19 and the town council has completed R&R works for over 361 blocks, with 296 blocks currently underway and 243 blocks in the pipeline.

Fu also added that sustainability is at the core of the Jurong town and highlighted the importance of partnership.

At the event, Fu also announced the partnership with Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) & Jurong Community Hospital (JCH) on the safe use of fitness equipment in public spaces.

"Jurong-Clementi Town Council is proud to lead the way as the first Town Council in Singapore with this wellness-focused estate," Fu said.

In the next five years, Jurong residents can look forward to a total of more than 200 upgrading projects, which include nine older estates to be rejuvenated, a new ‘Sports-in-Precinct’ initiative in Yuhua, and more than 40 sheltered linkways.

Jurong residents can also expect the Integrated Transport Hub, more cycling paths, the new Clementi Polyclinic and Jurong Polyclinic, and the new Science Centre in the near future.

Fu also added that the team will work hit the ground to understand new areas such as Hong Kah North better.

"Hong Kah North plan will be our plan, if we get the mandate to manage the town," Fu said.

let wp (and to a lesser extent, PSP for the team that includes Tan Cheng Bock)) contest the areas there is a high chance of the oppo winning. other oppo dun go disturb and dilute the oppo votes.

those with zero chances of the oppo winning. let the clown parties like this one go contest. other oppo stay out to prevent dilution of votes too.

hope the oppo parties can organise themselves. Those people like Lim Tean, GMS dun go sabotage oppo votes by having multi oppo contesting each grc/smc resultin in dilution of oppo votes. Could be the difference between winning or losing for the oppo.

if the oppo can't even organise themselves properly and put their own egos aside, what makes them think they have a chance now or in future?
Looks like those mosquito parties going to contest Yishun, AMK, Holland Bukit Timah, Tanjong Pagar, Toa Payoh Bishan to entertain the ministers and people and not to win seats

I think it's quite sad though that we are judging people by how they look and speak. They may not be the strongest candidate, but they also give Singapore Citizens a chance to exercise their democratic right to vote.

Moreover we are electing MPs. Do we need every MP to have gone to elite university?
