I’ve never been a fan of Ng Chee Meng, and for good reason. Not only did he go out of his way to curry favour with his boss and PAP, but he also compromised the very principles a union should stand for. Let’s not forget how he allowed the Union, which is supposed to be an independent voice for workers, to align closely with the incumbent party, blurring the lines between advocacy and politics (i.e. his facebook post by posting PAP pin aside Union logo).
Worse still is the glaring lack of accountability in the botched “almost-sale” of NTUC Income to Alliance. As the Deputy Secretary-General, NCM held a position of significant responsibility, yet he walked away from that fiasco unscathed. No proper fact-checking, no explanation to the public, and no repercussions which is a serious lapse, and yet it was quietly brushed under the rug.
It’s deeply troubling when you compare this to how opposition candidates are treated. Just take the case of Raeesah Khan, the scrutiny she and WP faced was intense, and the consequences swift. If the ruling party truly believes in fairness and accountability, then shouldn’t NCM be held to the same standards? Public trust requires consistency, and turning a blind eye only reinforces the perception of double standards.
He probably in a sure-win SMC, but seriously, hope the voters prove us wrong by continue to reject him until he learn the concept of accountability.
