WP volunteers distribute flyers at Jalan Kayu SMC hours after Ng Chee Meng's candidacy: 8world
Things are heating up.
Workers' Party (WP) volunteers were seen distributing flyers at Jalan Kayu single-member constituency (SMC) on Apr. 19 afternoon after labour chief Ng Chee Meng announced that he will contest the SMC in the morning.
Speaking to
8world News, a 35-year-old woman who lives along Fernvale Link Road said that she saw the volunteers on the ground floor of her public housing block at around 4:20pm on Saturday.
"I asked them whether [WP] will be contesting in the ward. They said yes, and the candidate will be announced soon," added the resident.
She further claimed that after she returned home, another WP volunteer showed up at her door.
However, the volunteer apparently did not disclose the party's candidate for the ward either.
The resident added that she did not recognise any familiar faces amongst the volunteers.
Flyer didn't contain name/photo of specific individual
According to a photo she shared with
8world, the flyer was titled, "Make Your Vote Count,” which was WP's campaign slogan for general election (GE) 2020.
Underneath the slogan was a photo of WP Members of Parliament (MPs) who were elected in GE2020 and served till Parliament was dissolved on Apr. 15, 2025.
It did not contain the name or photo of a specific individual.
When asked during a
press conference on Apr. 19 whether WP will be contesting in Jalan Kayu SMC in GE2025, WP secretary-general Pritam Singh did not give a clear-cut answer.
Instead, Singh said that the party would be focusing on the northeastern side of Singapore and constituencies which the party had contested previously.
Ng Chee Meng announced candidacy hours before
The WP volunteers' visit to Jalan Kayu SMC took place hours after National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) secretary-general Ng Chee Meng
confirmed that he will be the People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for the constituency on Apr. 19 morning.
At the press conference announcing his candidacy, Ng said that he decided to step forward in GE2025 because he wants to serve:
"Someone have asked me in my interactions, 'Why return to politics after the last election?' My answer is simple one: Becuase I've never stopped caring."
In GE2020, Ng was part of the PAP slate for Sengkang group representation constituency (GRC), which lost to the WP team after garnering 47.87 per cent of the vote share.
In the upcoming election, Ng may face a multi-cornered fight in Jalan Kayu SMC, as at least two opposition political parties have expressed their interest in contesting in the constituency, namely the People's Power Party (PPP) and Red Dot United (RDU).
