Allianz’s plan to return $1.85 billion in cash to shareholders within three years after the transaction in a capital reduction exercise proved to be a sticking point, prompting the Government to urgently pass new laws on Oct 16 to halt the deal.

Had the planned deal gone through, Allianz would have taken a stake of least 51 per cent in Income. NTUC Enterprise would have seen its stake in Income shaved from 72.8 per cent to between 21.8 per cent and 49 per cent, depending on how minority shareholders tender their shares.

NTUC deputy secretary-general Desmond Tan said on Oct 16 that the labour movement’s central committee did not know of the insurers’ plan to return $1.85 billion to shareholders before it was made known in Parliament on Oct 14.

Singapore Management University’s Associate Professor Eugene Tan told ST that “it boggles the mind that NTUC’s central committee did not know of the capital reduction”.

He noted that NTUC’s Mr Ng also sits on NTUC Enterprise’s board.

“Serious questions must be asked on why this vital part of the proposed deal was not prominently surfaced by NTUC Enterprise to Income’s board and shareholders, as well as the authorities,” Prof Tan said.

Agreed. Both made mistakes but let’s be clear:

One made a mistake in a private setting, caused no harm to the public, and immediately came out to apologise when it leaked.

The other made a serious public mistake that could have affected many Singaporeans, stayed silent when it happened, and is only apologising now out of convenience, while still finding excuses and hiding behind his boss to cover for his shortcomings.

At the end of the day, vote for the one who shows sincerity and wants to build a better future for Singaporeans and not someone who has no accountability and needs others to shield him from his own mistakes.

Jalan Kayu resident really need to make a wise decision in this election. I can't vote for them but I'm definitely voting for someone with accountability which is an important trait as a minister.

You are right! Given the number of WP mps in Parliament now, they can only speak up for the people, to veto, abstain from voting however policies passed by PAP will affect everyone in Singapore, not just the whole family.

A responsible voter should always examine the context and not just react on headlines or partisan spin.

Yes, both Andre and Ng Chee Meng made mistakes. But let’s not pretend they are the same.

Andre’s lapse was a private conversation that caused no public harm. He owned up and apologised the moment it was leaked, something not easy for anyone to do under public scrutiny.

On the other hand, Ng Chee Meng’s mistake involved a serious governance lapse where the decision could have affected millions of Singaporeans if the sale had gone through. And instead of addressing it when it first came to light, he remained silent. The apology only came months later, when the heat became too hard to ignore.

Some would probably be quick to say the same that Andre only apologised because he got caught. But let’s be honest. It was a private chat. Most people would not expect their personal messages to be made public. He did not owe the public that explanation, but he gave it anyway. That shows character. Meanwhile, what does it say about a leader who avoids accountability until it’s politically necessary?

In the end, vote for the one who takes ownership and puts Singaporeans first and not the one who hides behind excuses and party protection.
