The article said “doctor had not alerted them to any abnormalities”. Do or should doctors have a legal obligation to inform expecting parents about potential genetic defects of their unborn child?
If they didn't do the tests they won't be able to tell

No doctor would have been able to detect this issue before birth, not with current technology anyway. Serious physical issues, yes. Mental? How to know?

wow...another thread

assuming the kid is normal, I wonder what is his plan on having a newborn at 53yo
is he planning to work until 70 to support his kid until finish university?

I find that sometimes ppl acted on impulse and nv think far ahead for life changing decisions
maybe these folks have the "leave everything to fate...it will eventually worked out" mentality
If kid was normal wife would have stayed. Wife is the backup plan lor

At 53 chiu think young ladies like chiu...
it could have worked out ... if the child was normal, she was willing to bear children for him ...

its just awful when the child isnt alright, many people cannot accept this, we have the bukit timah twin murder case too

The mother probably thought the only purpose of having a kid is to guarantee more benefits under SG law. But after weighing the benefits versus the liabilities of looking after a special needs kid, decided better run instead
cant expect too much from anybody in these circumstances really

He has an extra chromosome. There is already test to check the DNA of the fetus. However, the doctors might not have suspected any problems from the standard prenatal tests so they might not have asked them to go for more comprehensive checks.

You see the issue about parents, they always feel their children are better than their actual worth.
I know I'm behkan, but I will still pick the best option available to me. You wouldn't?

They wouldn't know they would have a special needs kid and she couldn't handle the responsibilities together. Older doesn't mean will. In fact, older are at higher risk of having kids with defects.

Most people with traditional mindset who think marriage is important also think having kids is important. Females his age hard to have kids liao.

If you are referring to the harmony one, it only looks out for a certain types of chromosomes, not all the problematic ones. I'm not sure if this boy even has any of the issues covered under harmony test. As such, the doctor may have done harmony but harmony has very limited scope so not able to detect.

Can do whole genome sequencing. Basic pre natal tests only check for the more common problems.
