Wow I am actually thinking of going Melbourne in July! But I am pretty lost cos never been there before

Can you recommend me a hotel that is convenient and has lots of food nearby?? I prefer to walk around if possible rather than having to navigate the public transport

Also which area is convenient to stay for first timers to Melbourne

Thank you TS!!

I like Mantra at Russell ( has washing machine and dryer , kitchen, and I get some discount from Accor ) . It is practically within Chinatown, if you be hungry at 10pm there is still plenty of eateries. While food is primarily Chinese cuisine, there is thai, viet, jap as well.

A 30 min walking radius can bring you to many attractions.

You really post 1 of the best travelogues around here. A pleasure. (y)

Thx , I try my best

Chinatown - Little Bourke St.
Queen Victoria Market - go early, usually by lunch some of the stalls would close.
Royal Botanic Gardens
Docklands area - I think watching sunset and jiak around the area is nice.
Southbank area is more artsy and restaurants along yarra river, good dinner ambience. There is a casino but not sure if it is your thing, I have not been inside.
Melbourne Skydeck at Eureka tower for drinks in the evening/sunset.
Melbourne Central ( shopping centre ). the State Victoria Library
There are several museums including NGV and ACMI which are foc, Old Melbourne Gaol
The aquarium aka SEA LIFE is a nice visit for kids very interactive, buy tickets online 24 hrs before visit can have some discount.

Driving if you have time about an hour can bring you to Chandon and Yerring Station, nice wineries to chillax a brunch, but have to note opening and closing hours.

Phillips island is abit of drive as well, and they no longer allow cameras/phones. Tiagong St Kilda pier they also fenced up so people cannot get near the penguins.

Puffing Billy Railway needs prebooking weeks in advance.

LOL dont spend all yr time in these touristy areas. They are nice but they dont show you how the Aussies really live.

Take some time to explore the suburbs like Essendon, Clayton, Sunshine etc Thats where youll see the real day to day Aussie life..

Gives u a much deeper feel for the Aussie culture than any tourist landmark...

Depends on your taste, I am not sure if the CBD is particularly exciting to visit as I am not a very citified person and is my 3rd visit, prefer getting out of the urban sprawl.

If you are not planning to go out too far out of CBD, there is a free tram that you can use to go around parts of the CBD to visit several attractions, pretty good coffee culture.

Dining with a view of cattles grazing, and wineries.
There was a slight drizzle later part of the afternoon when we were about to leave.
Balcony by the side of the restaurant was a good elevated platform for bird spotting as well.
