There is a big hole there but driver car did not drop to direct hole consider lucky.

If the road collapsed, think no chance to survive;)
Think from the traffic marshalling worker reaction, seems like he was very quick to discover that the road started sinking before the car moved on it. He gestured wildly to the driver before the driver reach it, perhaps to stop the driver. But the driver not sure didn't see or rushing to get pass. So quick to go in, but froze when road started sinking.

What you want the uncles to do? Maybe they gotch experience with these sort of situations and telling the workers what to do? In these scenario I won't be surprised if the workers were stunned like vegetable. Anyway, makes sense the uncles don't cross over

https://www.straitstimes.com/singap...g-safety-time-out-on-similar-works-islandwide

Updated Jul 28, 2025, 05:30 AM

SINGAPORE - A concrete structure in a shaft being built at a PUB worksite along Tanjong Katong Road South failed at around 5.50pm on July 26, said PUB.

At around the same time, a sinkhole formed on the road next to the site, swallowing a black car. The driver managed to get out of the vehicle on her own and was rescued by construction workers.

PUB said the works at the site next to the sinkhole that formed involved the construction of a 16m-deep shaft to connect three existing sewer lines. It is still not clear what contributed to the failure of the caisson ring, the national water agency added in a statement issued on the night of July 27.

As a precautionary measure, PUB will be calling a safety time-out to review and ensure the safety of similar sewer construction works across Singapore.

The shaft has been backfilled to stabilise the surrounding ground, PUB said.

A ground-penetrating radar scan was also carried out to assess the surrounding area, the agency said, adding that it is still analysing the results.

PUB said it is working closely with the Land Transport Authority and Building and Construction Authority on repair works and to investigate what caused the sinkhole incident.

Workers began pumping water out of the sinkhole from 9.45am on July 27, and this was completed by 1.20pm, PUB said. The black car was hoisted out of the sinkhole at around 2pm.

The sinkhole has been filled with liquefied stabilised soil to further stabilise the area, and works to reinstate the road will start after, PUB added.

The stretch of Tanjong Katong Road South between Mountbatten Road and East Coast Parkway will remain closed to facilitate ongoing repair works.

“Motorists and commuters are advised to plan their routes in advance and expect possible delays during the weekday peak periods,” said PUB.

The agency apologised for the inconvenience caused, and said the authorities will provide further updates on the progress of works and when the affected road can be reopened.

Around 10 minutes after the sinkhole formed on July 26, 18 households had their water supply disrupted.

PUB said preliminary findings suggest that water mains may have been damaged as a result of ground movement linked to the sinkhole.

The affected pipes were isolated, and water supply was fully restored by 2.30am on July 27, PUB said.

It added that the damaged water pipes had led to water filling up the sinkhole. Videos of the incident showed water gushing into the cavity, completely submerging the car.

This stopped once the water mains were shut off, said PUB.

Wow surprised got so much collateral damage also. No water then how? They push out water vans? Or can connect to other pipes?

Curious how SG manages these problems. Very rare.

Timeline on road reopening will only be provided after sinkhole is filled & scans are completed: MP Goh Pei Ming

Repair works are progressing safely and expediently.

Work is still ongoing on the sinkhole that opened along Tanjong Katong Road South, and a definitive timeline for reopening the road will only be provided after the scans are completed.

This comes after the car that fell into the sinkhole was removed on the afternoon of Jul. 27, about 20 hours after the sinkhole appeared at 5pm on. Jul. 26.

According to Member of Parliament Goh Pei Ming, the workers are currently backfilling all the cavities with a kind of soil stabiliser.

This is to ensure that any small cavities within the walls of the sinkhole are filled with the stabiliser before they add graded stones, a material typically used to build underneath roads to fill the cavity.

From there, they will repave the roads and conduct additional checks on both sides of the road to ensure that all material underneath has been compacted and that there are no other cavities.

"So at this juncture, the timeline-wise, they will be able to give a definite timeline for the road reopening after the scans have been completed," said Goh.

"I think the engineers are working very hard to ensure this is safe for the road reopening again."

In terms of when the scans would be done, Goh said they are readying the equipment tonight, and once proceedings are "developing well" and ready, they will proceed with the backfilling and scans.

"So in terms of all the necessary steps, various agencies are making sure the steps are all prepared, the equipment, the personnel are all prepared, so that they're able to move in an expedient way."

Goh also expressed his appreciation for all the personnel across the agencies who have been working very hard from the night before to safely and expediently repair the road.
