Quite curious also. Perhaps someone can enlighten. So, for married couple, if they have the money or means, they can just buy the hdb under one person name ah, no need to have both the names inside? So, the other half is free to buy private property without the penalty right?

Go read MOP rules, no owner or even occupier shall own any private or even overseas properties.

You should be glad such rules are in place or else I too would have bought HDB, the rate of returns and appreciation are insane and you will be priced out by the rich.
