In response to queries from CNA, SkillsFuture Singapore said that about seven out of every ten people have not yet used the subsidy; the number of people who have already used it is more than 778,500, of which nearly half are Singaporeans aged between 40 and 60 and in the middle of their careers.
Authorities also said that popular skills training courses include information and communications, food services and advertising, and sales and marketing.
The government provided a one-off supplement of $500 in skills training subsidies to Singaporeans aged 25 and above during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The subsidy expires on December 31 this year, and the SkillsFuture Singapore Agency has stated that it has no intention of extending the deadline.
Authorities said some Singaporeans may not need the one-off subsidy at their current stage of life, especially those whose training costs are borne by their employers.
As for future training needs, the authorities said that Singaporeans can make good use of skills training subsidies with no expiration date and the substantial subsidies provided by the government.
According to data, the number of Singaporeans who used skills training subsidies last year surged by 35% from the year before, reaching 260,000.
Some of the reasons Singaporeans interviewed told CNA they haven't used their subsidies for training include a lack of time and difficulty finding suitable courses. Experts also pointed out that doubts about whether these courses will pay off in their careers may also be a factor holding them back.
