New MRT lines are planned in tandem with housing developments and travel demand, Acting Minister of Transport Jeffrey Siow said in parliament on Nov. 4.
He was responding to a question by Jalan Kayu Member of Parliament (MP) Ng Chee Meng, who asked if in light of the increasing housing density in the Northeast regions of Singapore, whether the unveiling of the Seletar Line would be accelerated to match the growing MRT commuters' population.
High housing density in Northeast
Ng's question comes in light of the recent implementation of a scheme offering free first rides to commuters at selected timings across six North-East Line (NEL) MRT stations from Dec. 27.
The scheme is aimed at moderating travel demands along the NEL and Sengkang-Punggol LRT network as the selected stations were found to be the "busiest segment" of the MRT network during the morning peak period, according to LTA.
The Northeast region is also a hotspot for a high number of upcoming Build-To-Order (BTO) and condominium projects, as pointed out by Workers Party MP He Ting Ru prior to Ng's question.
In response, Siow said that the Seletar Line continues to be studied, though he did not offer a proposed date as to when it may be unveiled.
"I hope to have updates on this sometime across the turn of the year, and proposed, probably during the COS (Committee of Supply) period," he said.
He reiterated that the planning of an MRT line is done in tandem with housing developments and travel demand.
"These are longer term plans which agencies work together very closely on, and we try to make sure that there is enough travel capacity to accommodate the demand for the long term."
Meanwhile, in the short term, adjustments will be made to accommodate the growing commuter population, such as the new free travel scheme and the addition of new buses to the transport corridor, he added.
Wah Brother Ng wanna pwn Comrade Siow?
