Sheng Siong awards long-serving staff members with gold coins

SINGAPORE – In recognition of their loyalty, local supermarket chain Sheng Siong has awarded its long-serving employees with gold coins.

Sheng Siong has over 80 stores islandwide, with the majority of the outlets in the heartlands.

The Straits Times understands that employees with five years of service were given 20g of gold, while those with 10 years of service got 30g; staff members with 15 years of service got 40g; and 20 years of service got a 100g.

At current prices, a 100g gold bar is expected to be worth US$14,400 (S$18,500).

Sheng Shiong at Elias Mall will be closing down in Apr 26. Heard NTUC taking over.

Not sure why. Lost the tender bid ?

Usually HDB premises are kind of guaranteed renewals if the tenant is compliant which I believe SS is..

most probably the renewals terms are not favourable… the store revenue may not have met the threshold for rental revised rates..

the area is super competitive and the landed population (small part of the catchment there) would usually have their means of getting groceries..

I don’t deny Sheng Shiong is a good company. But current P/E of 27 vs their average P/E of 17. Also their revenue, profit margin, profit, dividend is all rather flat. I don’t see how they can do magic. If pl claim their own brand is strong, they never see FairPrice and DFI own brand.

Only catalyst I can explain is the amount of liquidity stuck in SG banks. After the new low interests environment, our lao hero, heroines probably withdrew and start buying SG inc. lol! I won’t be surprised if PE shoots to 40.

Some companies just naturally command a premium like apple, Tesla etc.

Whether or not it's sustainable is down to sentiment

Fundamentally it's a low growth mature company that usually trades at around 15 PE

Quite disappointed. There is already 3 NTUC in Pasir Ris. Don't know why need a 4th.

Next time no more Sheng Shiong in Pasir Ris. One small giant. One cold storage but prices more ex.

Maybe something wrong with this outlet. Some time ago I posted that the cashiers there not friendly anymore like last time. Till now still the same. I noticed the cashiers stop asking if want to buy promo items.
